With Assassins Creed being such a popular franchise, it's sad to see that no one cares about poor Desmond. 
By the way, after Assassins Creed 2, Jade Raymond left Ubisoft Montreal to take care of a new studio (Ubisoft Toronto) and Patrice Désilets, the other creator of the series also left Ubisoft before Brotherhood was launched.
So with the producer and designer no longer involved in the series (and who knows if the writers are still there). it's no surprise that Ubisoft doesn't know what to do with the Desmond.
