Gaikai?  perhaps, but I doubt the patents are that valuable given that onlive had no pressure from them with their discrete business.

1st place in Music?  Thats Universal, who Sony jointly bought the parts of EMI with  (Sony is publishing).  Making money from music is difficult these days.

The Olympus deal is a good long term strategy, but it is VERY long term.

I dont see any quick returns here and thats the issue people are concerned with.

I read discussion that Gaikai's patents were more valuable than the ones Onlive have, not sure exactly what though. This is by far the longest term potential gain.

Shouldn't revenue streams be bolstered immediately by buying EMI? I thought the EMI venture put Sony up top? Something like 1 in every 3 songs. Maybe it changed already but there is this article.  http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304830704577496851972013284.html

Olympus is long term, but very nice projected returns. That and it is the smallest of the  purchases and the selling off of the chemical division covered that cost, though that isn't actually related.

Like I said, thats music publishing.

Universal are the biggest in recorded music

here:

The FTC and the European Union were concerned that the proposed purchase would impede competition in the music publishing world. But the E.U. cleared the deal in April after Sony agreed to divest various catalogues of songs it owns. The FTC followed suit, unanimously agreeing to the acquisition without requiring additional divestitures.

With this purchase, Sony will control the largest number of copyrights in the music publishing business — more than 2 million. Even so, the company will have less than 30 percent of the revenues for music publishing rights in this country, a Sony spokesman said Friday.

In trying to convince regulators that the deal would not be anti-competitive, Sony’s lawyers emphasized the fragmented nature of the business. They pointed to other well-established rivals, including Universal Music Publishing, which works with Adele, Maroon 5 and other top artists. Other competitors, the Sony lawyers said, also have gained a foothold in recent years, including Warner/Chapell Music, Kobalt Music Group and BMG.

With the deal complete, EMI will be folded into Sony/ATV in New York, a Sony subsidiary that is run as a joint venture between Sony and Michael Jackson’s estate. Sony/ATV represents the copyrights of Jackson, Bob Dylan and other legendary artists.

Among the coalition of investors involved in the purchase, the largest financial backer is an Abu Dhabi-based firm called Mubadala Development.

The deal came about after the previous owner of EMI Music was foreclosed upon by Citibank, which proceeded to separately sell the British company’s publishing arm and its recorded music division.

Universal Music Group has made a $1.9 billion bid for the recorded music portion of the business. That deal remains in limbo, however, while U.S. regulators investigate the competitive implications. The proposal has attracted more scrutiny in part because it is taking place in a highly concentrated industry, people familiar with the deal said.

While the publishing side of the business licenses musical compositions to television stations, filmmakers and a variety of other businesses, the recording side sells recordings directly to consumers.

Alright, makes sense. I never said number 1 in recording though. But I suppose number 1 in music is too broad.

AFAIK the games that were pulled from the stores of systems can be played as long as you have the files, but yeah if you delete the game from the System I don't believe there is a way to redownload them again, but since it's an xbla game you would be able to move that to a USB stick for fear of losing it if something happened to your Xbox.

But yeah you get what I meant exactly, it's that fear that you could lose it all so easily, heck it's not even a case of if on-live was to go down permanently you would lose it, there are times here if my net is down for maintanence or w/e imagine if any time you didn't have internet your consoles all go away too, not much fun to just be sitting there with nada or getting dc'd in the middle of a single player game, A joy only known by Diablo 3 players until now :D

What? I hope that isn't how XBL works. When you buy something from PSN it is added to your download list and you can download it whenever and however many times you want. It makes PS Plus manageable even for small hard drives, as you can purchase the "free" games and only download one, finish with it or get bored, delete it and go on to the next one. Even redownload the original title if you want to go back. It's all tied to the account so you don't have to worry about your system crashing, and with the 1gb of cloud storage all your game saves will be safe too.

As for cloud gaming, it is still out of reach. The infrastrucuter is not developed enough to handle the load or reliability it needs. Until companies put the money and time into fiber optics are anyone but the lucky few going to be able to take full advantage of game streaming. Outside of full games, streaming could have a variety of uses that will set next gen apart from the last. Technology is advancing and the next decade will offer things we didn't expect could be available to the mainstream.

It isn't.

Well good, that would be disasterous compared to the digtial distribution competition.

Outrun 2 Online was pulled from both PSN and XBLA. You can't buy it any more. I've looked into it and, as of right now, if you already own it you can redownload it. But who knows if that is forever or if you'll even be able to transfer it to the next gen of consoles.

whoa just seen here, I only meant in the case of games which had been taken off the services like the way Irem had any of their R-Type games removed from psn/xbla/wii shop channel if you own those games you can play them but you can't get them again from the stores I think if you got rid of them, well not from the wii shop channel, as for other stuff yeah anything you buy from xbox live you buy the lisence for it on your profile and on your system, so you can use it not only on your xbox but if you bring your profile to a friends xbox you can download any games you own there and play them on that system too, but it doesn't add the license to the 2nd xbox so you must remain connected to xbox live on your account or else the games revert to trials.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Ok, I see what you mean now. Yes that is a concern, but it is not really different from physical games going out of production, though I suppose 2nd hand would allow you longer lasting access. Still digital is theoritically more long term than physical copies unles you can take those physical copies and duplicate them but then isn't that digital anyway? I suppose the concern would be digital access limited to the upkeep of another entitiy.
