Forums - Nintendo - Brand-New Metroid In Development For Wii U?

Nintendo’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Scott Moffitt, hasn’t confirmed whether a new Metroid title is being developed for Wii U, but he did say fans of the series get to enjoy Nintendo Land attraction Metroid Blast while developers are “thinking and imagining” about the possibilities of Wii U’s Metroid.

A couple of days ago, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed that Nintendo EAD, Shigeru Miyamoto and Retro Studios are working on unannounced Wii U projects; among the three, who do you wish is the developer of the first HD Metroid game?

“…I think we all can’t wait to see what a Zelda experience might look like in high definition. For now, they’ll have to enjoy the Zelda: Battle Quest game that exists inside Nintendo Land. But I think that we can all imagine that Zelda would look great in HD, and there could be a lot of new features added with the [Wii U] GamePad.”

“With Metroid Blast, you get to enjoy that franchise while the developers are, you know, thinking and imagining what could be possible with Metroid on Wii U.”

Its coming, but when, and how?
My bet is, Prime series has a solid 1.5m+ core fanbase, and i dont think theyre going to forget abut it, i think we will see a Prime like Metroid, and a 2D one ala Mario

I know they won't make any more Metroid Prime titles, but I would prefer if the gameplay is similar to that title. The focus on realistic environments needs to be there once again, following the Wii's shortcomings. I also miss the multiplayer mode from Echoes, but it's not a must-have feature for me to buy this game, just a bonus.

Metroid as a franchise is still important to Nintendo. It's not the highest selling series but it's a very prestigious one and would be great to show off the power of the Wii U. Metroid would also greatly benefit from the U Pad: It's one of those games where you pause the game constantly to look at the map and the U Pad would eliminate that need. Using the Scan Visor by pointing the Pad at the screen sounds nice as well. As long as they don't use it as a gimmick, that is...

The question is: who will do it? Unless Retro's on it, they really don't have a team set aside for this. Could be 2014 before we see another Metroid game.

I have mixed feelings. It will almost cetainly use the tablet, which will be awesome for scanning, and lame for shooting.

Actually, might work best with Other M-style action gameplay, if they can get a grip on those cutscenes.

If done right, this could be GOTY.

Gamepad + Metroid = match made in heaven

Great Retro....

but do not forget Donkey Kong returns on Wii U

Right. Take the Other M gameplay, add in free-movement with the first-person aim mode (but restricted movement. You go to, say, Metroid Prime tank-like Samus, rather than the highly acrobatic Other M/2D Metroid Samus), cut the cutscenes, add pickups back in, and blow the world open for Super Metroid style adventure (invisible-hand style guidance), and then damn.
