They never really show you a full body shot of the creature. Most of the film you get bits and pieces (arm, tail, back, etc), and its not until the end that you get enough to put them together. That effectively keeps the suspense.
@gamerace - It looks nothing like a man with prosthetics in the film. It does have the same sort of homology one would expect from any vertebrate, but it does not immediately recall any specific creature.
SPOILERISH....
If anything the creature reminds me a bit of a naked, flightless bat. It has short hind legs and long, spindly forearms with what appears to be lengthened metacarpals (hand bones). Imagine for a moment a bat's long fingers fused together, and walking on it's knuckles. That sort of describes it. But not exactly.
