I thought so too, the bottom image is a side by side of the two, not just olymoss's picture. I think at least, not too sure myself. The zig zag is identical though.

It's clearly ripping off his work. The concept of the image is the same and as stated before the zig-zag pattern looks identical.

Maybe the same missle was used to bomb both of the silhouettes necks.  It's Gearbox's way of showing that the Borderlands universe exists within the Star Wars universe.

Zigzag pattern is identical, flying vehicles are also above the horizon and they used the same sillhoutette head idea.

Kind of interesting that claptrap picture exists in both the images. How did that happen?

Edit : Seems like I misread. The claptrap one is bolderlands and the picture besides it is the artist's version.

That zig zag is literally a copy, if I was gearbox I'd just own up to this and apologise, there's no way they could claim originality for this, although both pieces do look really good :)

The concept is not his by a long shot.  It has been around for decades, especially as box art for films.  If the way you frame an image can be called a rip-off, then they're both guilty.

The zig-zag is literally the only element that proves the Gearbox artist saw the Star Wars fan-art.  However, because that's such an inconsequential element, I'm almost certain that this is the artist's attempt at homage, to show that the Star Wars piece inspired him.  It just doesn't make sense otherwise, as the artist is clearly capable of designing his own background pattern.  Either that, or it was supposed to be temporary, and the artist forgot to change it.

The artist who designed the Star Wars poster is right to not consider this a big deal.  Artists draw inspiration from each other on a continuing basis.  I mean, after all, I'm pretty sure Star Wars and Boba Fett aren't his original ideas.
