Popular British artist Olly Moss has claimed that an artist at Texas studio Gearbox has lifted his work for Borderlands material.

Update: Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has reached out to Moss via Twitter. "You're amazing. Inspiration is part of art and you've inspired us," said Pitchford, before adding, "But the bit that was lifted is uncool, so... consequences."

"We should be working together to do it right and legit," said Pitchford to Moss, who's seemingly very nonchalant about the ordeal. "This whole thing is so far from a big deal. I wish I'd never even said anything," replied Moss.

Moss, who has designed posters of blockbuster films such as The Dark Knight Rises and Moon, as well as cover art for games such as Resistance 3, said on Twitter today that his work has been plagiarised.

Moss wrote: "I'm a huge Gearbox fan so I was really disappointed to see this image inside the Borderlands 2 box" before posting an image he discovered [see below].

That claim led to one of his followers posting a comparison shot of Moss's work against the Borderlands box.

"Technically whoever made the image did lift directly from mine," said Moss.

He added that he was not angry with Gearbox, "just disappointed".

"Gearbox is one of my favourite developers. Would have jumped at the opportunity to work with them. Oh well," he said.

Moss clarified that he was not considering legal action.

CVG has contacted Gearbox for comment.

Hm. Maybe, maybe not. It's not like the work Moss created is an entirely new idea. The silhouette framing a landscape has been done many, many times before. Only the zig-zag seem similar.

I feel his pain. Even if it is just a coincidence it is still very similar to his work. I'm very pleased with how he is handling it though, much better than shouting "thief, thief!!!"

Huh?  Is there another image not in the OP?  Other than the zig-zags, it's not the same picture at all.  

I would be willing to bet that this is exactly what happened--

1. Concept artist made concept art early in the project (concept art is very often put together from many pieces of art or other pictures, original or not)
2. Picture got put in some folder somewhere on the network under concept art.
3. Picture was forgotten about for two years.
4. It came time for the publisher to make the insert, used the concept art folder.

No malice anywhere and nothing even anyone's fault, just an unfortunate goof.  Just be happy the artist isn't being bad about it and handling it well.

At first I thought that too, but then I realized the bottom picture is the borderlands one next to the one he claims is being copied. (At least I'm pretty sure thats what it is)

They don't look very similar imo. Ive seen more similar boxarts than those two pictures, let alone concept art.

its not similar.   its clearly the exact same zig zag copied from the original photo..

I'm gonna guess they never even saw his artwork.

I mean... to have to, they'd of had to gone to his random website right?

But the zig-zag pattern under their necks are exactly the same.  That would be a huge coincedence. 

Surely not a coincidence that the zig zag pattern is exactly the same???
