Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo and Unity Tech partner up - What does this mean?

Sources: 1 - 2 - 3

Unity Technologies, provider of the Unity multi-platform engine and development tools, announced that it has entered into a worldwide license agreement with Nintendo to provide a version of Unity which supports deployment to the Wii U to Nintendo and third-party developers as well as Unity’s 1.2 million registered developers.

“The rapid growth of incredible games coming from the experienced and talented developers in our community makes Unity the new development platform of choice for AAA console developers. Nintendo’s unfettered access to Unity will produce a wealth of insanely good games from knowledgeable Nintendo developers and the Wii U deployment add-on will create an amazing opportunity for our massive community of developers to showcase their incredible creativity on one of the most anticipated and innovative gaming platforms to date.”

- David Helgason, CEO, Unity Technologies

Unity will create a “Wii U add-on” for their engine, which means developers will be able to easily publish their games on the Wii U, in addition to other platforms. Unity currently has over 1 million registered developers. The engine costs around $4,000 to $5,000, depending on the add-ons and additional services. While that may sound like a lot, it’s a fraction of what other engines cost. For example, CryEngine 3 reportedly costs $1.2 million to license for a game.

This is big news for indie devs, basically will make it  easier to put their games on Wii U. What do YOU think?

Could translate into an excellent opportunity for indie developers ...

Sounds pretty good. While they say you can make AAA games with the engine I read elsewhere that you can make some pretty basic games with it. So this might help make more WiiUWare games available due to the semi low cost of the engine. I have no fucking clue really but with a game engine that only cost 4-5k one can only speculate more games.

Really good news, more indie games means more creativity. Can't wait to see what those indie devs will do with the GamePad!

nice!

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Unity is a big deal. It's a very powerful and flexible engine with low barriers for developers and broad platform support. Nintendo's smart to make sure Wii U developers have ready, well-supported access to it.

Unity already supported last gen consoles so it would be logical for them to continue to support next-gen. Now Nintendo only needs to reduce the barriers for small Indie developers, and I think we've heard that they have done just that up till now... If not, it only means that future eShop games are easily exportable to iOS or Steam for middle to big developers/publishers.

Doesn't really look as smooth/fluid as the one Nintendo's bird/sakura tree clip, but that's just me...
Love the rollercoaster ride, though! XD
