Forums - Sony - "New" PS3 Pricing Explanation

Does anyone have a list of games that require extreme amounts of hard drive space?

I don't think there is a standard, standalone version of the 250GB model yet, since the only thing announced on the PS Blog is the UC3 + Dust 514 bundle for $269.99. In a sense, since that is a $70 value, the 250GB model is only $199.99 :P

Anything you download from PSN. A few of those and you're done.

It depends on what you download from PSN. If you're downloading full retail titles, you'll be lucky to get 2 titles; heck, some retail titles on PSN won't even fit on the 12GB model. PSN only games usually range from 500MB to 1.5GB, so you're probably looking at 5-6 of those.

Well, obviously those. I'm talking about retail

I'm very, very surprised that they didn't announce one of the models in the US for $199. Disappointing to say the least.

That pricing made me very sad. Sony is going to be blasted to oblivion by Nintendo and MS over the holidays, should the later come with a pricecut.

yea but the lower prices are due to retailers on current models isnt it? couldnt that mean some retailers will reduce the 12gb one which could mean being sold at 200 maybe. Yea just looked up that old article on poland's leak of the new ps3 the 12gb one is being advertised at 199euro's or is that fake

Actually no. The retailers don't get more then a $1.00US extra revenue from each console they sell. The money they "make" on the console depends on their supply chain; because of the market model the game systems are sold to them close to the MSRP. What happens is Sony stops producing the older models so they are stuck with stock that doesn't get bought back, so its either sit on the old stock and hope they move or take a loss on the old models to get the newer ones in. So the price of the consoles are determined by Sony, no retailer is going to take a loss on a console just to sell them unless they are taking up inventory space.

HD bump same prices.

This bundles (which are a great value by the way) are probably just for the holydays after that the 250GB super slim will cost 250$ and the 500GB will cost 300$.

If you don't want the 270$ super slim bundle I guess you can buy the current 160GB slim model but why would you do that when for 20$ extra you can get 90GB more of HD space, a game and a stand.

Here's IGN unboxing the thing, showing the disc tray!

love the way the tray popped open and caught um by suprise, it looks a bit shitty being honest, I'm absolutely glad I went and got my slim recently rather than wait on for this, the slim looks so much more professional.

On a serious enough note tho, anyone getting the 12gb version will never be getting psn+ infamous 2 alone is a 15gb download... you literally could not install some ps3 retail games on this so yeah... zero ability to use psn+ with this model of the system, baffling when sony are trying to push psn+ more than ever now.
