Sony was Nintendo audio partner for the SNES and they wanted to work more closely with Sony on a disc based console.   But Sony wanted full branding rights to the console which Nintendo eventually said no to.   Sony then went on to take the original ideas for the console and made the PS.  Nintendo tried to strike up a CD media system with Philips but it fell through.  By the time all that happened, Nintendo had no choice but to stick with cartridges.    Carts were a last resort, not a first choice.

Keep in mind Sonic had a liiiittle more time to accomplish these sales. Sonic's high time was during the early 90's. Today he's much smaller... poor Sonic, I like him

It's not even that ridiculously old, just Nintendo's sales plummeting in record time. On the other hand that's the case at the end of each generation. If there is one thing Nintendo needs to learn from the other two guys it's how to smooth out the transition stages... Nintendo's sales are like a rollercoaster ride

Wonder if Nintendo can get back up there with the 3DS and the WiiU. Doubtful, but who knows. Their stock has really risen lately, after all.
