I've spoken to people who are only buying a next gen console for GTAIV, and are buying a PS3 because they "don't trust anyone but sony to bring out GTA". I've told them about the 360 exclusive content... they doubt it's true. It's incredible, the level of fanboyism to be found amongst people who aren't even that keen on computer games.


Sony tapped into a market with playstation that went beyond the typical gamer. It still thinks PS is cool, and other computer games are nerdy. With the wii, nintendo's gone totally beyond this demographic, but they're the people microsoft and sony will be fighting over, and the PS brand is still massively important to a lot of them.

Other than brand loyalty, why have nearly as many people bought a PS3 last year as bought a 360? We're seeing the impact of it in front of us, and still, people deny it.

Personally, I have never seen much "loyalty" from the 60% of gamers I would refer to as being "Mainstream" gamers ... For the most part these gamers are not early adopters and tend to buy systems based on what their friends, relatives and co-workers own.

The 20% core gamer demographic tends to be where people who are "brand loyal" live

Probably about 10-11 million in 2008, and that may be a little too nice. We'll see though.

9-10 millions, a nice boost from last year but nothing earth shattering.

I'll say 12M-13M, very nice games coming for PS3 and it's cheaper.

2009 will be the peak year of the ps3, so this year is a precursor to next year IMO. It's setting up for its biggest year of its lifetime, so 11-12 million sounds reasonable. I personally wouldn't be surprised if it managed to get to 14 millions, but lol, very small chance of that happening.
