By your definition of objectivity no one's judgment can be taken seriously. You seem to lean towards the idea that Bit era FF games are somehow written better than more recent entries. By the law that I was too young to appreciate the older ones, doesn't that mean you could simply be to old to appreciate what the 3D era FFs had to offer? All FFs are a bit different yet hold on to key traditions as a series. They are all very much alike yet vastly different all at the same time. You could very well be wearing the Rose Tinted Glasses of the "Back in my day..." variety of thought. By that rule, people always think a certain style of what they grew up with is better than what came before and after it when they are honestly not all that different. If this is the case we are both slighted by our upbringing with the series.

This thought always creeps into my mind any time this discussion gets brought up.  Because I was 11 or 12 when I first played FF6, and it was the first FF I played when I was old enough to know what the hell was going on.  Its very likely that I feel its better for nostalgic reasons, the same as many FF7 fans.

I still defend that FF6 had more of those deep emotional moments than FF7 did.  The comparison between FF6 and FF7 being analogous to book vs movie is apt.  FF7 was cinematic.  FF6 was not.

For the record

"Spoony" is an outmoded English word which means that a person is amorous beyond the point of reason

So Tellah calling Edward a "spoony bard" actually fits very well

Yeah, the original FF4 translation was very bad. Lots of Engrish. Oddly enough, FF7's translation is pretty bad too. I didn't notice it at the first play through, but subsequent play-throughs I've noticed it alot.

FF4's original translation was very good. Not as good as 6's, but worlds better than 7's.

Perhaps I'm thinking of the different versions.  I played a fan translation of the hard mode FF4 released in Japan, and the dialog is so much better to the point its almost a different game.  We got that translation officially in one of the PS/GBA era re-releases.

I think the fact we even question if our opinions are objective MAKES them objective. I pride my self on being able to stand back, take in information, then formulate an opinion there of. A non objective person doesn't do this. Like I said before, I had played several FFs after VII, barely understood any of them. Then went back and replayed them and it all dawned on me what they were trying to say. For me, FFVII is has just never been touched in Story, I think X is the only truely comparable one. I will say that before ever playing a FF game I always had a deep appreciation for occult, scifi, tragedy in my stories. These things fascinate me. So the fact that FFVII shows all 3 in a unique way possibly does pull me more to it. Yet I chalk this up to the fact I find them to be much more interesting if executed properly. Medival time periods bore me to tears because half of them hold the same tropes they always have, hence the preference to Sci Fi. Religious adoration and devotion is also amusing to me. And lastly I like my emotions to be engaged when reading/watching/playing something, not just go through the motions. It is not enough for me to see a bunch of people get slaughtered, I need to see how it effected the individuals left behind(links to why I feel Kefka is so blah). FFVII just hits all the right notes for me.

Finally somebody remembers how bad FFIV's translation was before the remakes. I have heard FFVII's translation is supposedly bad but I failed to ever see the lines people spoke of. I can't exactly recall the faulty lines from IV either but I am much more attuned to FFVII's dialogue and cannot think of any. I DO on the other hand remember quite a few typos after playing it some more.

I am playing through FFVII again on my Vita, I will try to keep my eyes out for any hokey lines( that is if SE didn't actually fix them after porting).

I don´t get the ff7 hate, i dont see ff 7 fans hating ff6 but i see ff6 fans trash talk about ff7 a lot.

Bad blood between Square and old Nintendo fans and because of the sheer popularity of FF7 I think.

I'm another member of the FF7 > FF6 camp, I'm only 10 or so hours into FF6 (after the battle of Narshe) and I've just lost interest in playing it.

That's not wht being objective means.

For example... Bill O'Reily stands back, takes in information and formulates an opinion based on the info he gets...

and it comes out biased as hell.

Being objective means being aware of different frames of reference and being able to judge things within their own frames of refrence while trying to account for bias.

Sorry for the tangent but......
I just was booting up FFVII on my Vita and noticed something that I've wanted to get off my chest for a while.

When referring to FFVII's beautifully crafted story, I frequently give props to Sakaguchi as well as Tetsuya Nomura( the character designer). Many question why Nomura gets so much credit for FF's rising popularity. I frequently explained how Nomura actually has had a lot of input in the story lines throughout the most popular entries (VII,VIII,X). Many scoffed at the idea, and swore Nomura had no power or input. Well, after watching the opening credits again in FFVII I realized that they denote both Sakaguchi and Nomura for who wrote the story. I am unsure if this is a sly new addition to it or if it has always been that way. Nevertheless, this is proof of Nomura's key input (I knew of his affect earlier because of interviews talking about how many of FFVII's concepts came to be in the first place).

Sorry, just had to get that out :)
