Forums - General - Guess whos back!: World's richest woman calls for Australian workers to be paid $2 a day to compete with companies hiring cheap African staff

why should some people be born super rich while the majority are born into poverty?
she sounds like a typical super rich/lucky idiot making up nonsense drivel to seek attention.
you can not force that nightmare of everyone being paid only $2 per day to make the lucky super rich elites richer without there being resistance from the working people. $2 a day for all workers is a ridiculous undemocratic proposal.

People in cheap labour developing nations can not survive on $2 per day but she expects people in rich developed countries to live on $2 per day.

She really let herself go. She looked ok in '82!

I was thinking exactly the same....

Things like the minimum wage exist to ensure a healthy middle class. If workers aren't being made decent wages, they won't have enough MONEY to buy anything and fuel the economy. Incredibly low wages for workers may seem like a solution, but it would only cause other problems. The middle didn't exist until places like the US and Australia began to establish labor laws, under which the middle class has been able to thrive...until the most recent recession, anyway.

It's also frightening that these mining companies are complaining about regulation: mining is an INCREDIBLY dangerous job, and its those regulations that keep it from being more so. Thousands of people die in Chinese mines every year due to a lack of regulations and cost cutting measures. Is that REALLY the sort of model she wants to emulate? This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that SHOULD be regulated to ensure the lives of the workers.

If these CEOs feel so strongly about this, then they should get down into the mines themselves. Risk their own lives to. They won't of course, because they don't have to, which is why they are even saying these things. It's sickening.

The world is currently going through sluggish economic growth. THAT is the issue. Not workers being made too much and being too safe.
