They make a lot of money and too many people know the value of PS for it to die off as well. Do you know how many companies would jump at the chance to buy the PS brand? Too many, and in a heartbeat. Sony's woes aren't the PlayStation woes. They focus on their gaming end and that is it. On the other end, if Nintendo went out of business, they would be in GAME OVER mode because they are a video game only company. That would directly correlate to their progress and health. For Sony, it's things like Bravia (TV) that are losing them money hand over fist. When you have divisions like in Sony, things like losses become not so clearly defined. Even when Sony was announcing they were in the red with their PS3, they didn't say they were making money from the whole PS branch. |
Nintendo's not at any risk of going bankrupt so I'll leave that alone, but the Playstation brand would be hurt pretty badly if Sony was to be broken apart ...
A large portion of the R&D costs and the upfront losses on systems like the PS3 are justified because Sony as a whole will profit from them. If Sony can use the Cell as a dsp in televisions (as they initially planned on doing) and the PS3 drives adoption of Blu-Ray, HD televisions, and surround sound systems then the PS3 acted as a catylist driving Sony's sales.
If a "Playstation" company existed and had to be profitable like Nintendo does, I don't see why it would be more successful than any other gaming only company that was in direct competition with Nintendo.
