Forums - Nintendo - WiiU will bomb hard this holidays season and will only sell, by the end of 2012, roughly 3M total worldwide

Based on various analysts' results, I can conclude that the WiiU will struggle and sell only 3M by the end of 2012.

It's almost time for Nintendo to show more info on the WiiU along with the price announcement.

Can they turn this doom train around within such a short time left on their hands?

"Only 3M?" The Wii did that much by the end of 2006, and everyone was predicting failure for Nintendo back then too for choosing to go with an underpowered system and current-gen visuals as opposed to making the leap to HD.

PS3 on the other hand managed only 1.3M total by the end of '06 despite launching days apart from the Wii, and then struggled for the next 2-1/2 years until it finally dropped to $299 with the release of the Slim model. Now THAT is what I call bombing hard at launch.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

2012, this is this year. I dont know how it would sell 3 mio in 1,5 or 2,5 months? Not possible. The hardware is bad, and it will be surely overpriced.
Why should any parent buy a wiiu? It s not like with the wii., where it was revolutionary to play with motion control and everyone could think "Oh I will keep myself fit with all the motion gaming" or "Oh at least my kid(s) will do some moves and not only sit on the couch while playing games. this should be healthy, yes I buy them a wii".

So many titles coming out for PS3 and 360 during the end of the year. I think the wiiu will struggle against the current consoles which have way more games and cost less.

I am interested to see opening night and the masses camping to wait for the system. Might do it and sell mine on ebay for as much as possible. Launches are always a good time.

As for doom, I still stick to my guns and suspect it will be a lot less popular than the Wii. Doom is unlikely, but a stellar performance from the Wii U seems senile when it does not look that different from the PS360.

I'm with NightDargon83, the Wii only manage to sell 3M and look how it's now, my personal guess it's that the Wii U will do probably the same as the Wii by the end of 2012

Nintendo and PC gamer

It comes down to NSMB U. No other game will persuade people to buy a Wii U near launch.

Are people burned out from 3D Land+NSMB 2?

I don't think it will be a bomb but it won't be able to compete with 360+PS3. People aren't going to buy the system for games already on the HD twins so they're best hope is NSMBU. Even that's going to be a problem because of NSMB2. Nintendo is releasing these games way too close to each other and it's going to hurt sales.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

That's a good point... for a company that was always weary about releasing so many sequels to their games so close to each other (hence the reason why we routinely had to wait anywhere from 3-5 years for new Mario and Zelda games for the past 2 decades), Nintendo sure has been in a Mario frenzy lately.  SM3DLand and NSMB2 have been released less than a year from one another on the same console, and now we're getting another installment in the NSMB series mere months after "2" (which is actually the 3rd game so far counting the Wii version).  And I'm sure by next E3 we'll see another Galaxy or similar style 3D Mario game for the Wii U as well.

It's possible that parents could be suffering from Mario fatigue by the time the holidays roll around... and with the 3DS getting all the attention right now, the fact that Nintendo hasn't been actively promoting the Wii U AT ALL since E3 could see thems struggle a bit both during and after the holidays as many shoppers have already made up their minds about what they're going to be getting their kids and family for Xmas.

Certainly not, because the vast majority of potential Wii U consumers doesn't even own a 3DS.

People who will buy a $250+ Wii U just for NSMB U but not a $170 3DS just for NSMB 2?

I'd understand if the Wii-Sports like audience or Nintendo Core audience were transferring immediately but I don't think there's enough there yet. There's going to have to be 3D Mario, Zelda, or Smash Bros for the latter to switch.
