They've actually done it kind of cleverly.  It's not called "Final Fantasy XIII-3", it's called "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII", suggesting that if you played the first game but not the second you could get into this new installment.

Of course, I doubt it'll work out like that, but I think they've been kinda clever in their naming & focus of the game.

Kind of surprised not to see Monster Hunter Tri, I guess japanese people don't really like the console monster hunter games

Here is the list for North American games. I included console, handheld, and pc sales because I didn't feel like using a calculator =P. WIthout those sales the only signifcant difference would be halo 3, red dead redemption, and halo reach would move 4-5 spaces up the list. I might remove handheld and pc sales later if op wants to do a direct comparision. 

Please correct me if I accidently listed a game developed in Europe or if I missed a big game developed in America.

These are the big franchises developed in Europe so people don't wonder why they are missing. Lego series, Just Dance series, Battlefied series, Grand Theft Auto series.

Assassin's Creed and Fifa are developed in Canada. I might make a USA only list later which will have some more variety considering how many fifa games there are on this list...
