If you've ever been at the bottom or know people at the bottom... there is a BIG difference from the bottom Quintile and the next one. However, again... only using the data he provided, that best represents his point... 8% at the bottom... raised to the the highest position. So it most definitly isn't 42/50/0/0/8% situation... actually they have their source cited so i'll have further data shortly.
Basically, research shows that to get out of the bottom percentile with something like a 75-90% ability within like 5-10 years you need to accomplish 3 things. 1) Graduate Highschool. 2) Don't have a child before you are 25. 3) Have a job lined up when you graduate. Even if it's just working at McDonalds.
A) Have a lot of highschool dropouts, like the county I'm in, where I think the graduation rate is... 46-56% or so? B) Do an AWFUL job with teen pregnancy with it happening all the time. C) Give everybody the idea they should go to college, even when they really shouldn't. |
One thing that is missed when people talk about people who end up staying in the economic "class" that their parents were in is that a large portion of the values, beliefs and skills needed to be successful are learned primarily from a child's parents; often through modeling but also through direct lessons.

We both now have Master level educations and a family income of six figures USD. During college I did not go out and party each night/weekend, I did not join a dumb ass frat house.. don't need to pay to have friends... instead I worked 40hrs a week at retail and busted my ass in a computer lab. Worked hard early to play more later. :) |
While I understand what you are saying, you also have to realize that you were lucky to be born in a part of the globe that can offer you those opportunities.

^_^
She ate a whole lamb prior to making those coments. This is the same woman trying to cut
her brother and sister out of the will.... Human trash....
Greed you gotta love it. Its the main reason the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
This is the same woman who bought almost 20% of Fairfax Media, demanded 3 seats on the board of directors (probably needed them all for her fat ass), and wanted to be granted abilities to override Fairfax's charter of editorial independence. Yeah, just what we need, another Aussie asshole looking to add their own personal opinion to the news. The difference is, Murdoch tries to be subtle about it. Everyone can smell Gina doing this a mile away!
After she found that the board would not give in to her demands, she sold all of her shares in Fairfax. Yeah, no agenda at all....

In case anyone was wondering what she looks like from behind.
Everyone needs to shut their trap about this wonderful lady! Because of her money all the pig farmers of Western Austria have a roof over their heads from selling her their bacon and bacon fat. |
Good one she is definetly one of the most obnoxious super rich people in the wold. Sure its not that hard to make money if you are born with a silver spoon in your mouth.

That's actually not true. Money does "come from nowhere" as value is increased by new products getting introduced into the economy. Additionally, as low level workforce dereaeses demand increases and so does wages. For example in North Dakota it's something like $12 an hour to work at McDonalds. Everyone coulnd't be rich relativly, but compaired to how we are now... everyone would be "rich." Just how, the poor now, are better off then rhe Rich of say the 1970's. |
I'm pretty sure there are a lot of high paying mining jobs in North Dakota so without those natural resorces their would be no $12 an hour jobs at McDonalds.
