| MrT-Tar said: I thought AoE III was disappointing as well. I know it was to be expected given the leap in pc power from the late 90s to mid 00s, but I far prefer the pre-rendered sprites of AoEII to the real time models in III. I would have preferred if Ensemble used pre-rendering again, just utilising the extra space of DVDs in order for each nation to have their own styled units/buildings and things like that. I also would've preferred it if they changed and extended the time period/setting. I personally found the American colonisation theme too narrow and slightly boring. I was personally hoping for the game to cover all of the early-mid colonial and Napoleonic period, probably up to and including the Franco-Prussian war. I wanted AoEII-esque campaigns featuring Bismark, The Duke of Wellington, Lord Chelmsford, Ulysses S Grant, Oliver Cromwell, Napoleon I, etc. That was the AoEIII I desired |
If they did that, I would have had no problem with the time period. There was lots of exciting things going on in Europe during that time. And since it would have been not just about the colonization of America, countries like Sweden could have been playable as well. Then people could see just how badass the carolinians were :D
I LOVE ICELAND!

This discussion has resulted in me reinstalling AoEII and AoM.
Running them in full 1080p is fantasticcccccccccc.

haha yeah I'm also getting the urge to play these games all over again :D
I never actually owned a single copy of the series, until like 4 months ago when I bought 1&2 with expansion packs - cuz I like to play them from time to time :P

On the RTS front, I am thinking maybe it would be worth taking some time to fire up one of the Warlords: Battlecry games, or even Kohan again. The former was an RPG meets RTS where you had a single hero you would get XP and develop by doing a campaign and skirmish. The interface on Warlords: Battlecry is also top notch. Yes, it is sprite-based.
