Forums - Gaming - If Sony made a sub $399 PS3 at launch- would it have outsold the PS2 and force MS out of gaming?

Dilemma: what would you rather have:

A dominating weaker PS3 w... 69 40.12%

The PS3 as it is now 103 59.88%

Total:172

It's pretty funny OP still believe PS4 will be a game console

Thats just the thing, between Microsoft and Sony, Sony does the multimedia schtik but doesn't take the focus off the games. Sony has spoken about this before. They know what the primary objective is in keeping the console a gaming console.

The industry gave Sony quite a bit of flak for it's lack of focus on games in early PS3 marketing.

If the PS3 had released for $398 exactly, this entire generation would have turned out differently. This is a FACT.

No way to know, not just about the price but the games. Of course a better price would result in a better first year, but man the PS3 had a horrid first year and a half

It outsold the Xbox 360's first year. If you actually check year for year the PS3 made more over its respective time being a year behind.

That's not actually saying much considering where 360 was coming from (Xbox) and where PS3 was coming from (PS2 which sold 5x's more than Xbox)

Would it have outsold the PS2 though? I agree it would've pushed the XBox away.. Move would probably have taken some of the Wii Fever as well. Still in its first year, there was no great exclusive on the PS3 (besides Uncharted). It really kicked off 2009 imo (even 2008 was a bit dry).

Thats because development started late. Whilst Nintendo and Microsoft moved on (as they generally do) Sony tends to see their consoles through to the end. Their games came late but in 2007 was when the first wave of new IP's came. The well known games didnt really hit until 2008-2009, which is why no one paid attention. When Sony gained steam then everyone focused on the new IP's like Uncharted, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword and more.

That's the problem,at least MS show "yeah we're making 360&nextbox become multimedia device, what?problem?don't buy it."(of course we should ignore how many studios they build/bought in last 2 years and let's talk about FASA Ensemble etc)

Sony...ah wait,we're in game discussion aka sony discussion#2(Please ignore what they're closed even in this year and just talk about they bought sucker punch Media Molecule etc)

But it's "nice" to see just because a game have another name that means it is very creative(=don't need to care what genre of the game is)

And you know,if any 360 game VGCer don't like,it's not a game.if any new PS3 game announced by SCE,it will automatic become a great game(at least until it release)

With the same Sony advertising? Wii would dominate and 360 would be the core machine.. PS3 would be distant third... their marketing somehow got really disconnected to... everything..

That baby commercial was pretty bad.  You must never forget!

A higher-priced PS3 would not have fared well compared to the Nintendo Wii, especially if both had similar characteristics. HD was not the big seller in 2006 than it is now, so a $150 difference would have made a big difference.

And the lack of graphical prowess would have either (a) cost the PS3 third-party games or (b) forced third parties to release dumbed-down versions which means they decided to go ahead and also cheaply port to the Wii. So either the PS3 gets fewer games or its cheaper competitor gets the same games.

Also, the problem with the Move is that it is too exact. Given the forgiving nature of the Wii remote, those looking for a casual experience would have had much more fun with Wii compared to their PS3 Move counterparts.

I really have a hard time understanding the point you're trying to make.

Nope the PS2 bagged the core and the casuals which is why it will be hard to surpass in sales. The Wii couldn't even accomplish that either. I doubt the PS3 would've outsold the Wii. The Wii bagged the casuals.
