Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony’s PlayStation 4 to support 4K resolution - Yahoo News

This is Awesome!!!!! Now if I could only get a 55" 4k TV for less than $1000........ :(

You guys all this means is that the PS4 will be able to output 4K resolution when watching Bluray. The PS3 is capable of outputting 1080p but doesn't mean the games run natively.

e=mc^2

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

I don't expect this to boost the price tag by anything noticeable really. This is only support for 4k, doesn't state that games will be running anywhere near that. I expect most games to be 1080p for PS4.

Regardless, a  BD 4K players is high-end so I expect a boost in price that, to keep low they will have to play some high-volume magic to pull off.

I wasn't even thinking about games at that point.

Well I think we can all agree that this is impractical for games, to power that and look better than PS3 games, you will need the equivalent of 2 Nvidia 670s which will cost you about $800, so shouldn't really be happening

As for adding the capabilities for blu-ray, it seems like a decent idea. You would expect that the PS4 will be around for at least 5 years, in which time 4K might well be common, so if it doesn't cost much then Sony might as well

Sony will never learn. Using their game system to spearhead new formats didn't work with PS3 and likely won't with this. Guess they're intent on learning the hard way!

Sony is no longer in the position to use one division as a trojan horse for the benefit of another. They need to be thinking on a point-by-point basis.

If true, this is disconcerting.

This, Sony has learned nothing

What is funny is that when PS3 came out everyone said "It's too early. HDTV are too expensive."

Look how that turned out.

Now it's "It's too early. UHDTV are too expensive."

PS4 won't be releasing for at least another 12-18 months. So at some point within the first 2-3 years of PS4 lifetime those UHDTV prices will drop dramatically.

No idea how this is being spun as a negative, let alone people thinking this will result in a $400-$600 console, lol.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

It doesn't work that way. It was a different time with a different readiness for adoption. Look what happened to 3D?

Come on the trend is not as simple as you lay it out man.

It's already been said that adoption of BD was sluggish at best, so to much lesser extent 4k.

I think 4K resolution is completely pointless. You could only ever tell the difference if your TV is over 52'' and your sitting 2-1 meters away. I'd rather OLED technology became the standard for TV's, 4K is only useful for people who use projectors or have obscenely large TV's. I hope games next generation stick to 1080p with increased anti-aliasing, frame-rates, more complex geometry, better lighting/shadows and improved special effects.

The PS3/ Xbox 360 could easily render at native 1080p but developers will almost always choose to use 720p in favour of better graphics which is the same reason they mostly choose 30fps over 60fps. I hope this is always the case until visuals reach a point where they can't be much improved then resolution/ frame rate will be the only thing that can be increased.
