There's a market for it. But it's a declining market for sure.

The sales are not reflecting that.

I think NA/PAL sales and Vita sales in general are very much reflexing that.   3DS is doing fine in Japan though (possibly at Vita's expense thanks to MH)

Who cares about Vita? These comments are only about the 3DS and it is doing quite well in the U.S. Vita's failure is its own issue just like the PSP before it.

The failure of Sony's platforms speaks nothing about the performance of Nintendo's handheld and Satoru's Iwata's comments.

Even Iwata has acknowledged 3DS relative sales weakness outside of Japan, but they keep hoping the lastest game will give it the boost it needs (currently NSMB2).

PSP sold 70m+ units, which, if I'm not mistaken is more than NES, SNES, N64 or GC sold although not as much as Nintendo's handhelds.  Hardly a failure.

Vita's struggles and 3DS's softness in sales outside Japan do suggest the market is changing.   Vita, moreso than 3DS offers deeper, richer game experiences, yet it's struggling terribly.  The other problem with his comments is the assumption that that iOS/Android would never get deeper, richer experiences.  I think that's only a matter of time.    They may not get as deep as what home consoles offer, but then they don't need to, as seen by Vita's struggles, there's not a big market for that.

Personally, I believe that 3DS is going to have a very good Christmas this year, worldwide.  Vita, not so much.

I agree.   People aren't going to change overnight and the industry will take longer to change but change is happening.

I think 3DS will be a successful and profitable system for Nintendo for years but at the cannibalization of Vita's sales market and nowhere's close to the success DS was (more along the lines of PSPs success).

I think iOS/Android games will continue to become deeper and richer experiences and it'll become increasingly difficult for Nintendo to create experiences that can't be had on those systems as the years go by.

"As smart phone games continue to grow, deeper and more advanced experiences are being offered. Wouldn't these directly eat away at the future handheld market?"

I thought his response to this sort of question really didn't address it well enough. He's right that there will always be those who want a deeper and more engaging experience. What he didn't say was how the handheld market will continue to evolve to give that deeper gameplay experience that the mobile market can't provide in the future.

We shall see in time.

A game-optimized interface and other game-centric hardware features (dual screens, 3D), along with specialized software designed to leverage it all.

I'm not entirely convinced it's enough though. There's a lot of parallel between handhelds/smartphones and home consoles/PCs. The two big differences are that mobile operates under severe constraints which promote convergence, and pocket PCs have never been as capable as they are now. Home PCs have always offered experiences roughly as compelling as game consoles, but handhelds haven't really had pocket videogame competition until just recently.

The capability to browse the internet on a smartphone is a bigger threat to dedicated gaming handhelds than games on smartphones.

Nintendo's and Sony's struggles are rooted in their fight to change the relationship between people and handhelds, but if you want to be successful, you need to adjust to consumer behavior instead of trying to change it.

Sorry for the late reply (I forget some times)

What do you mean by that? Forget all those shenanigans and focus on gaming only? If so, I agree.

I said this in the other thread, but no wonder GBA sold a lot. A 2003 ad they were priced at 59.99. Just one year later PSP would be 250! Maybe to go mega cheap is the way again. Forget 3D, GPU, CPU... go to the gameboy route.

I could be talking rubbish though, market changed a lot since then.

NO lol, the 3DS will sell no where near as poorly as the PSP, do you even have proof of the 3DS doing poorly outside of Japan. Have you seen the graphs, you probably just ignored them, but the 3DS is ahead in NA and EU and actually behind in Japan.

iOS games can become as deep as they like, they still cant affect traditional handhelds because they lack the franchises(Mario, Pokemon, MH), the buttons, and the pricepoint(80 dollar monthly fees arent exactly cheap).

I noticed Vita fans want to try to place the 3DS in the same boat just because they dont wanna admit the Vita is a failure it is just sad. Actually do some research and stop just making things up.
