Forums - Nintendo - Proper HDTV for Wii

Hello

I heard that gaming consoles (all of them, not only the Wii) encounter problems on some HDTVs, mostly lag.

So before buying one I would like to hear some oppinions on what should I buy. I'm looking for a 81 cm (around 30 inches), preferably from Samsung.

What you need is a HDTV with a low response time, ideally you want something with less than 8... maybe even 6ms response time as a maximum.

I don't actually own a HDTV so I couldn't say for sure, but using the same logic for TFT/LCD monitors should see you fine with HDTV's as well. I have a 19" widescreen monitor with a 5ms response time and I've had absolutely zero problems with any games on this. The effect of lag that you mention is called Ghosting.

It won't actually be much of a problem at all, the only occasions where it could be is with rhythm games such as Guitar Hero, but even then they offer calibration methods to make up for screen lag given by HDTV's.

Again though, look for a screen with a low response time and you should be absolutely fine.

I could be wrong but I think the lag is only if you use composite cords, if you get component cords you will be right.
I got my wii hooked up to a LG 32inch LCD with components and there is no lag.

My Samsung 42" Plasma works like a charm with my Wii.

Component cords are out of discussion. I'll sure use them.

I'm having trouble finding any LCD with less than 8ms response time. 99% of them seems to have 8ms.

Once again I could be wrong, but 8ms is very much good enough, anything under 30ms would still be good enough.

LAG during games happens on EVERY digital TV, what you want is one with "Game mode" That removes the processing time and thus the lag in any controls. The screen delay really doesn't have any bearing on the processing time it's usually much lower.

Lag? Not on mine.

I got a Hitachi 42" full high def LCD with 5MS timing, no lag whatsoever

I've literally just ordered this one about 2 hours ago - tried reading up on this for days and it gave me a headache to be honest. If someone were to launch a wii HD Tv advice site with forums and reviews it'd be really popular.

The response time is apparantly what will cause the lag but the samsung gaming mode reduces that response time and helps reduce motion blur. This TV does apparantly have a very slight motion blur with high speed movies or football evidently (but any tv that doesn't have 100mhz refresh rate will have) but it is highly rated.

Another site I found extremely useful is http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/selector.php - they have really detailed reviews in them and even though they wont reference the Wii that much you can read between the lines when they discuss response rate, ghosting, motion blur and try to make a guestimate on how it'll be.
