Forums - Sony - Sony close Studio Liverpool

I don't get it. They need software to sell the hardware, and they need to sell software to make up for hardware losses. So why close a software studio?

I LOVE ICELAND!

Apparently they were working on two PS4 launch titles (Wipeout 4 and a stealth game).

Sucks big time.

Do you know that for sure? Those games will probably just be handed to someone else.

That makes no sense.  So they close a studio and give the games to someone else who isnt doing anything?

This was a studio that was in a facility that also houses other Sony people, quite a large building in Liverpool. So the only saving here is the cost of developing those games, primarily staff costs.  The games are far more likely to have been simply canned.

never,say never. there's alway's hope.

Who the hell was telling me that the gaming business won't be affected from the financial crysis Sony is in?

Not Nintendo fanboys. That's for sure.

These news are always sad. That's one reason I always thought gaming companies should sign partnerships with the publishers so they remain independant. They shouldn't to be bought then being closed by the publishers when they are restructuring. They should always stay third pary and find publishers.

This is well sad to read, that owl logo was part of my teens :[ from lemmings to seeing it fly at me on the saturn version of wipeout 2097 I think one of the best and most memorable studios from my growing up.

Will be missed.

Edit : wow reading there on their wiki they also were the devs behind

Alundra - Amazing psone rpg

The colony wars and G-police series - great flight and space flight series now gone forever.

the 2 discworld games :[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[

Krazy Ivan - An absolute must play psone game just for the nutso comedy between stages, including the biggest rage and retaliation on an army ever... not for destroying the eifle tower.... not for destroying the arc de triumph..... but disneyland.  Seriously if you not played that game. missing out

the Rollcage series, absolutely amazing alternative to wipeout from the psone era , think it was also on the pc but yeah really original over the top destruction racing on roofs game.

and last... but utterly not least and probably the game they'll be missed for the most.... They are the force behind... Spice World! the spice girls themed psone game.... such sadness in my heart thinking about it now. (because it was awful)

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

I really doubt the wipeout series will die. It's a very loved series amongst fans.

Release said they will try to move staff but ther will inevitably be redundancies.  If Wipeout isnt going to die why get rid of the team developing it?  I am strugling with how a saving is made if the game needs to be developed elsewhere by someone else?

Why is that so hard to understand? The IP still belongs to sony and the series has seen moderate success. They can easily get one of their studios to make another wipeout eventually and I'm certain they will too. The franchise has a nice following among the fans and is an integral part of the overall image of the PS Gaming library. But in short term we won't see that because they seems to want to cut cost and possibly focus on bigger ps4 (and maybe psv) titles with more sales potential. We just had wipeout 2048+HD+Fury combo also so I think we won't see another wipeout for another few years. It's all about the timing.

I really hope majority of the staff if not all of them will get relocated and not fired. These are very talented devs.

Loved the Wipeout series when it first came out. Also, much love to Destruction Derby. That game deserved more love but not sure why people didn't enjoy it as much as me. I played the shit out of the first one and the second one decently.  I see people giving Wipeout love but where is the Destruction Derby love???
