I just can't see the Vita dropping off the market any time soon, and here's why: Sony simply won't let that happen.

They have invested too much in it to admit defeat and let it die. They might hurt its sales by holding off on a price cut, but they'll stubbornly continue to support it.

And it probably won't come to that; AC:L, COD, bundling and the holiday boost will most likely turn its fortunes around.

Why are scaled-down versions of titles on home consoles going to turn the fortunes around for the Vita?  If someone can play Call of Duty at home, with their multiplayer stats and leveling there, why would suddenly the portable version be of interest?

Because you can't play the console versions of Assassin's Creed 3 or Black Ops on the bus/train, or on your lunch break, or on holidays.

True, but statistically most handheld gaming is done in ones own home. With great games on portables that are cheap and growing in the amount of publishers supporting it, Vita is looking more and more like something that does not offer as much. My mobile can play great games and go with me anywhere. I see little room for portables outside of phones and tablets very soon. The only region that might save it is Japan. People should not be surprised if it goes the way of the Dreamcast.

Woops. Double dipping.

It isn't the same game though.  Titles like that had ended up appearing on handhelds for awhile, and they didn't make a difference.

The Vita having a dual stick setup, something that PS3/360 gamers feel very comfortable with, is an advantage prior portable games in this vein haven't had before. Yeah, there was Burning Skies, isn't in the same size class as AC or COD.

Maybe it's just that I haven't experienced it, (I was only 12 and unware of console wars when the Dreamcast went kaput) but I just fnd it hard to imagine a major console like the Vita actually dropping off the market and ceasing production within 2 years. I mean, Sony can be damn stubborn, I find it more believable that they'll fight an unprofitable uphill battle a la the PS3 than let it die after investing so much in it. And that's only if the worst comes to the worst, Vita still has cards to play.

If the Vita fails it will fail more like the Saturn and less like the Dreamcast ...

Essentially, Sony wouldn't "dump it" after 2 years; it would just be kept around in a form of living death in its third and forth years so that Sony would have time to engineer a replacement. For every game worth playing released to the PS-Vita in this time period 10 would be released to the 3DS, and possibly 5 would be released for smart phones. This would result in significant "hurt feelings" between fans, retailers, and third party publishers and Sony would have an uphill battle when they released their next handheld.

The problem is that COD will be anally raped by the critics.

Seriously, Nihilistic should start to lube their asses to avoid the pain.

Being crap to you. Not to critics.

The contrary, actually

Isn't it appalling that critics nowadays have standards so low?

Sony appears to becoming the Sega of the handheld games industry, in that there just isn't much room for them, between Nintendo gobbling up most of the larger, more complex games and the tablets/smartphones going for the mass market with their micro games. You've also now got a lot of third party games on the 3DS that cover much of what would normally be on a Sony platform, like Resident Evil, Metar Gear Solid, Kingdom Hearts, Monster Hunter, etc..

I think sony's main problem, as I've said before, is they're cinematic types of games simply work better for the home console experience, and aren't as well suited for quick, on the go gaming on small screens. But with that said, I think they will get their act together, and Vita sales with eventually pick up, though I don't seem them touching Nitnendo handheld-like success, and perhaps not even PSP numbers. But it will perform respectably. Remember, it is always games that sells hardware, and the Vita will get more games in the future that we know nothing about. Could be another mega hit like Monster Hunter that will reinvigorate hardware for all we know.

While I was never too crazy about Sony games, I certainly prefer them to many of the simplistic micro games that litter smartphones and tablets these days, which are themselves littered with advertisments, so I hope they get it together.
