If the Vita dies now, we'll never stop hearing about how it was the greatest handheld of all time.

Sony is doomed.

Well that never going to happen.

Now, now, folks. Let us wait till the Holiday Season is over. Then we can call it doomed or not.

Take into consideration that as we only have 2nd and 6th quarter numbers, we have to interpolate 3rd, 4th and 5th quarter numbers. Dreamcast sold in USA and Europe in the 5th and 6th quarters, so the million it sold in the 5th quarter in USA alone modifies the interpolated numbers of the 3rd and 4th quarters.

I doubt it. The PlayStation brand is still strong throughout much of the world, and they have some powerful IPs. But the Vita is in severe trouble.

That said, if the 3DS could thrive today despite having about 3 good games for half a year, the Vita can pull itself out of its current troubles.

I hope not. I like dedicated handelds. I'm hoping the Vita goes on to sell 50 million or so and gets a great library that takes advantage of its console-like prowess. I'm just not sure how it's going to get out of this rut. Maybe Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty spinoffs will save the day for it in the West, but I honestly can't think of anything that will save it in Japan, at least in the near future. And considering how the PSP's haven was Japan, that's worrying.

Even in the 3DS' weeks prior to its price drop (when it hit its lowest numbers due to all the hold-outs), it didn't fall to numbers as low as Vita has recently. Ouch!

My beef with Vita is not that it's a bad device, but that without it, Sony would focus more on the PS3, which would be much better for them (and me). And let's face it: Sony is certainly not in any position right now to be championing a very niche device in today's mobile market.

Things will surely pick up a bit during the holidays and after its inevitable price drop next year, but 3DS is only going to become stronger and increase its install base even more over time, and short of a veritable miracle, I don't see Vita having a very bright future.
