It's sad to see such an awesome device perform like this.

psone - 33mhz - 102million units
n64 - 94mhz - 32m
saturn - dual core 30mhz - 9m
----------------------------------------------
ps2 - 333mhz - 155m
xbox - 750mhz - 24m
gamecube - 485mhz - 21m
----------------------------------------------
ps3 - 7 core 3ghz cell - 64m
xbox - tri core 3.2ghz - 67m
wii - 749mhz - 97m

even in handhelds power =/= sales

psp - dual core 333 mhz - 71m
DS - 66mhz+33mhz - 151m

The most powerful machine I don't think in the history of console wars has never came out on top sales and profits wise. it's very odd that companys havn't figured it out yet that more mhz just doesn't right up equal more games, gamers or sales on their systems.

Tis a bit sad considing how absolutely incredible the psp was compared to the DS but I think the homebrew community made more use of the psps' power than any developer ever did.

Companies consistently make this mistake by listening to their "fans" which generally represent the top 10% most vocal of the top 10% most "hardcore" gamers ... If you're listening to this 1% you will likely produce a very powerful $600 console rather than an underpowered $250 console that is designed around a new user interface

One thing in the Vita's favor in the 3DS doesn't seem to have a powerful lineup for the rest of the year.

Well, it has Pokemon... even if it is for DS.  That and Mario is all it needs.

Will Pokemon push many systems though? Won't almost everybody who's into Pokemon already have a DS/3DS?

And will Paper Mario? The "Sticker Star" subtitle does have the whiff of a gimmicky/childish approach that might put off some gamers, and again, won't Mario fans already be buying the system for 3D Land and NSMB2?

I'm aware of the pattern. I'm fine with the Vita not being number 1. I never expected it to be. If this gen played out like PSP/DS only even more in favor of Nintendo, I would be fine with that. But it sucks that it's doing so much worse than that. Also, when I say awesome device I don't mean just hardware. The system actually has an awesome library for those that want deep games as well as the short burst pick up and play fans. Access to a lot of the PSP's library and soon a decent chunk of the PSOne's library. It has an awesome feature set. It's an all around great device but sadly consumers just don't want it.

Shuhei Yoshida, after reading this news on the Internet: "Oh, it seems these sales are bad. But I know exactly what the Vita needs: less exclusives!"

For the few Nintendo fans who don't a 3DS (myself included) Paper Mario is definitely a system seller, but those are obviously the minority, it will give the system a decent boost but of course not like a Mario Kart or NSMB game.

Even though Pokemon is for the DS it will definitely increase the 3DS sells substantially, just look at the hardware sells in Japan, there was a substantial boost for the 3DS during that week, of course the franchise is more popular in Japan but I imagine something similar could happen in the west.

With the Sony fan majority here on the internet and with gamers from all walks of life seeming to agree that Sony is catering to the average gamer the most........its stats like this that are a true reality check. That the internet minority in no way represents the real world and what they like or dont like.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Everyone who likes Pokemon certainly won't own a 3DS as there's been no Pokemon released specifically for that system yet.  And judging from the spike in DS/3DS sales when Black2/White2 was released, no, everybody who likes Pokemon don't already have a DS either.

Paper Mario has a huge cult following.  I don't think there's anything gimmicky/childish about it all, you're just trolling.  Besides, Paper Mario isn't a system mover at all, it's there to please fans of the series and will sell quite nicely.

Bottom line:  3DS will have no problem this holiday and Mario and Pokemon will really push sales.  The 3DS will be fine.  It's the Vita you need to be worried about.

Pokemon is just as popular in the West as it is in Japan.

What pickup and play games are available?  If they exist I'm not aware of them, that's how bad the marketing of the Vita has been.  Consumers cannot make buying decisions if you don't inform them.  This has been one of the worst managed releases in memory, it literally has no buzz...
