Forums - Sales - Sony: 2.2 Million PS Vita Units Sold Worldwide

CVG

The contrasting performances of the two handheld systems were revealed today when Sony confirmed to CVG that worldwide Vita sales stood at 2.2 million units as of June 30, 2012.

The figure was originally provided to website PlayFront by PlayStation Germany's Uwe Bassendowski, although the article didn't specify a cut-off date for the sales.

Prior to the confirmation of 2.2 million Vita sales, the system's last publicly announced sales total was 1.8 million as of the end of Sony's financial year which concluded March 31.

The new calculations means that the PS Vita sold about 400,000 units worldwide during April, May and June.

When combined with separate Sony data, it shows that the PSP is outselling Vita globally by a ratio greater than 2:1.

In August, Sony told investors that combined Vita and PSP sales reached 1.4 million units during the three months in question. Therefore PSP accounted for about one million of the total, or 71 per cent of Sony's handheld unit sales.

In a new interview with CVG, PlayStation Europe CEO Jim Ryan said "we still have a significant PSP business in many markets, which is something that tends to be forgotten".

Earlier this month Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Fergal Gara said the company "would love" to be selling more Vitas, while SCEA chief Jack Tretton labelled Vita sales "acceptable".

Yet Sony still has high hopes for its acclaimed handheld. Ryan told CVG that a strong Christmas line-up, complete with Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified and Assassin's Creed Liberation, is expected to reinvigorate the retail performance of the new device.

always have to keep in mind that sony only ever reports shipped not actually sold to people and saying that there are 2.2million shipped I mean there has to be at least 200k sitting on store shelves right now waiting for someone to come and buy the thing since there is almost that number of game stores worldwide and everyone of them would have at least 1 or 2 vitas waiting to sell so yeah the number is actually probably far worse than 2.2m we're looking at below 2million here I would bet.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

They also needed to drop the price alongside those 2 new titles.

Its gonna be a missed opportunity and its gonna sink the Vita even further instead of saving it.

Wait... is ths shipped or sold?

It is ALWAYS shipped (i.e. sold to retailers).

That makes Vita at least 400k overtracked... ouch.

500k (if you are going by VGC numbers)

Also 2.2 million shipped is a bit odd considering the fact worldwide its been out 8 months, you would think the number would be higher, its like their not even trying o.O.

I don't think it is lack of effort, I think it is lack of options ...

If we were dealing with Sony in the mid 1990s (a highly profitable company) they could probably cut the price of the PS-Vita to $200 including the memory card, and spend a few hundred million dollars securing exclusive rights to well known IPs, but they don't have the money to do that today.

I could be completely wrong but I suspect Sony is working extremely hard on a re-design of the PS-Vita to be released next year that changes the form factor and reduces the manufacturing cost so that Sony can afford to sell it for less.

Well, VGC has it at 2.4 million sold to cconsumers for June 30th. The real figure is likely around 2 million sold (200k on store shelves, 400k overtracked). If we assume Sony didn't overship on the quarter ending March 31st, then it means Vita's weekly sales averaged a little higher than 30k worldwide. This is worrying because it indicates that weekly sales during the quarter might have dipped to as low as 25k (To counter the boosts it got games like Persona). Weekly sales during July and August are also likely sub 30k.

There is a good possibilty that Sony overestimated the Vita's wester launch and overshipped the device during the March quarter. Seeing that there is too much stock, they then decided to undership for the June quarter. Meaning, it could have sold more than what it shipped (500k?). No matter how you spin it though, theses numbers are TERRIBLE!

Good news for Sony though, it seems the PSP is undertracked alot. A million sold would mean it averaged > 70k weekly during the quarter (more than double Vita). I bet those missing sales are in Europe and developing countries. Even if overshipped, it's unlikely they overshipped by such a huge amount.

I really want Vita to succeed it is a great machine. I have had it for about a month and really enjoyed Unit 13, UC GA, MK and Gravity Rush so far.

I really hope Sony can turn it around they are in a tough spot they cant really do a price drop yet, I think the bundle route is a good start but including at least a 4gb memory card is a must for this holiday season.

This holiday is going to be so exciting to follow

It's literally a make it or break it situation for Vita in all territories. Do or die.
VG Chartz could go pay-per view, it's going to be intense.

The blood, the sweat, the tears... Vita vs the World!
