To be honest - how many frauds to you expect to prevent with this ?

And your analysis seems quite off thh : http://www.usnews.com/debate-club/should-photo-id-be-required-to-vote/voter-id-laws-disenfranchise-millions

Not if you actually look at their study and see how they got those numbers.... which usually break down to.... "Look at the DMV dababase and compare it to citizens, ignoring everything from slight name differences and the fact that other government ids exist... well and not even to bother looking at who actually voted."

If you notice, whenever they do actually find someone who would be disenfranchised, it's always a really elaborate story, that sucks, but is an exception to the rule.

Fact is this was a bipartisian issue that Democrats backed out of.

The ACLU is pouncing on the one in PA, but we need more action on the matter.

Ok come on now.  They aren't classist.

They're just common sense.

I mean... I think we should put as much stringency on helping to decide the fate of the country as we do opening a bank account, cashing a check or getting a library card.

Honestly, it's a miracle anyone can function in todays society WITHOUT a photo ID.

Considering you need one for basically every single legitamite way of getting money outside of someobody with a photo ID giving it to you.

Every citizen SHOULD have a government issued photo ID.

Why?  So that the government can keep track of us?  State-issued drivers licenses are just fine, thanks very much.  It's not like the government doesn't already have an ability to track us.  We're given a social security number upon birth.

I think you kinda self defeated your own point there.

In the era where everyone keeps there money in banks, and buys stuff with debit cards... I'm not quite sure how a government ID would make us easier to track.

I mean... like I said, you pretty  much need a government ID to do ANYTHING in this country anyway.

Only way your going off the grid is if you get an under the table job, find someone who will rent you an apparentment under the table on an upfront basis (since you need ID to get an apartnment) and keep all your money under your matress.   Either that or go all "Survivalist" and go into the forrest some where.

I don't see how a government ID makes that any harder.  Since... you know... you could just throw it out.

It's not like you could stay off the grid and vote anyway, since you'd have to go to your precinct to do that... and they keep track of voting registration and who votes.

So if the government really wanted to find you and knew you were going to vote... they'd just ambush you there.

No, I don't think I self-defeated my point at all.  I explained myself very clearly, and as you clearly illustrate, you do pretty much need a government ID under today's conditions.  Pretty sad sign of the times we live in, I'd say.   Where in the Constitution does it say each citizen should be handed out a government photo ID?  I understand the need for driver's licenses for the purposes of insurance and piloting a vehicle, but that is purely a state matter.  I do not see any purpose served whatsoever for the federal government to force everyone to carry a photo ID.  The only result that could come from it is a level of citizen control, and that is not a proper function of the federal government.

Maybe I'm getting your point wrong then but as far as I can tell it's...

"Voter ID laws shouldn't be legal because the government can track us everywhere we go already due to needing government issued identity to do pretty much anything important like have a job."

If they already can track you anywhere... there is no downside, since the only time the government ID is going to allow the goverment to track you when it couldn't before.... is when your voting....

and only if you are commiting voter fraud... presumibly with a fake voter ID.

Your concerns only seem valid is a world in which the laws for things are VASTLY different then they are today.

Wow. Well, I know a lady who has worked her entire life and works to this day. Her husband go injured and can barely walk. I suggested that she apply for welfare. I admit that I didn't click the links because I have to get ready for work in fifteen minutes so I'm just replying to what I think this thread is about. I may be waaaaay off and if I am, ignore me.

I just want to say that some people need welfare. Until there's a way to separate those that need assistance from those that abuse the assistance, you can't punish anybody. To paraphrase a saying, I'd rather a hundred guilty men go free than to punish a single innocent man.

THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I'm walking out the door 2 so I did not watch the video but this is the best way to put it. There are people who really need it. I know some of these people and help some get to there appointments  when I can. These people are hurting bad. Worked there whole life. A lady I take is very nice and never asks for nothing. I just ask her if she needs a ride or needs some help. Before me and a few of her friends noticed she wasn't eating all the time. So that doesn't happen anymore. We all cheap in here and there and it makes the world of difference. However I could not think what would happen if she didn't have friends. Her husband died of diabetes and she also has it.

Yes there are some out there who cheat the system. However I would also like to say that every one should have a chance to vote. This sounds very crazy. I will watch later.

The point is specific to Pennsylvania, but in PA, the voter ID law mandates that it has to be either a Driver's License, passport, or DMV-issued photo ID, because they have very strict requirements about what kind of ID it is. Other forms of identification are not valid. Such IDs are not universally required, as its different from your welfare ID or your medicare ID (which are invalid)

Some laws may be more progressive on the matter, but the PA law is classism.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Voter Id laws should be illegal unless they make it free for the individual to get and access to the ID. Or it is a voter tax and under the constitution you can't charge people to vote. Meaning if I have to buy a ID to vote, you are taxing me to vote. If I have to drive 50 Miles to obtain that ID, you are charging me to vote.

So who cares about tracking. bush did a study between 2002-2008 and found 15 individual that actually did voter fraud and 10 accidentally voted twice< OLD PEOPLE sent in there vote and then voted again at the place. This was accross the whole country. So lets talk about the real issue. Most poor elderly people vote Democratically and they want to wipe the votes off to win. IT'S VOTER SUPPRESSION.

NO ONE IS ILLEGALLY VOTING, REPUBLICANS ALWAYS WIN WHEN THERE ARE LESS PEOPLE VOTING. So they know the best way to do that is make a ID that old people or the poor can't get to and even afford. Sorry if you can't understand this.

I've got to ask...

how is it classism to require a free photo ID to vote.... and when like 99% of registed voters already have such ID?

Funny thing about the ID laws is that there is less than 500 known cases of fraud (from all states in 10 years I believe) and most of the fraud is from absentee voting which usually favors Republicans.

Also, I just got laid off from Flextronics due to them losing their contracts.  They laid off almost all their contract employees while retaining most of the hired on employees.  Let me just say I worked my fucking ass off for that company for less than 11 dollars a hour which included the 3rd shift bonus.  Main point: USA manufacturing industry (especially in Texas) fucking sucks.  Most manufacturing jobs here offer no more than 10 a hour.  I'm kind of happy though for being laid off because I'm sick of 3rd shift.  Also, it would be nice to use my 16k debt college degree in Wildlife Management at some point in my life.  Right now I just view it as a waste.
