"Sales decreased 14.5% year-on-year (a 10% decrease on a constant currency basis) to 118.0 billion yen (1,493
million U.S. dollars). This decrease was primarily due to lower sales of hardware and software of the PSP®
(PlayStation Portable) and PlayStation®3
, partially offset by the contribution of the PlayStation®Vita introduced
from December 2011."

primarily... so PS3 and PSP fell more than PS2.   1.7m max for PS3.  1.5m to 1.7m.

The only possible kink is that when Sony say "Sales" they actually mean the revenue they make.... I don't follow PS3 news much, has there been a price cut since last year? (if yes then it is still possible for shipment figures to be (at least marginally) higher than last years Q1)

Thats not it.  They actually said revenue is down primarily due to lower sales of hardware and software for the PSP and PS3

I copied the statement from their files. You could be right in their meaning, as they also use "Unit sales" when talking about shipments, but everywhere it sales "sales" on it's own it then gives figures in Yen.

For example this bit from the MP&C division definately indicated "sales" means money in the bolded bit (also mentioning "segment sales" a few times, also meaning money) whereas the next bolded bit specifies "unit sales"

"Sales increased 132.9% year-on-year (a 151% increase on a constant currency basis) to 285.6 billion yen (3,615
million U.S. dollars). This increase was primarily due to the consolidation of Sony Mobile, partially offset by
lower
sales of PCs mainly resulting from price declines.
On a pro forma basis, had Sony Mobile been fully consolidated in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year,
segment sales would have increased approximately 14%. This increase was primarily due to higher average
selling prices of mobile phones resulting from a shift to smartphones from feature phones, and higher unit sales of
smartphones
driven mainly by the strong performance of XperiaTM S and XperiaTM acro HD."

The first bolded bit indicates PC sales were down, but that was mainly due to price declines and not neccessarily lower unit sales.
The second bolded bit is after mentioning segment sales would have increased due to both higher selling prices and unit sales.

Either way it wouldnt make any difference.  Neither PS2 nor PS3 has had a price cut.  So lower sales revenue would = lower sales in units sold.

They did had price cut last year, so its posible they are not talking about unit sales. Doesnt make any sense for PS2 to increase from 600k to almost double that this quarter.

OP can sleep better knowing this.

Why would 360 and Wii overship last quarter? Those look like normal numbers.

maybe its because the 360 outshipped the ps3 by around 1million last year and vgchartz numbers has the ps3 at 300k ahead in last year's total. That's why people think the 360 overshipped last year.

Last quarter Sony eventually released Vita shipment figure, so hopefully they will breakdown between PS3 and PS2 also.

Did they?

Can you link me to it as I can't find anything that definitely includes (never mind specifies) Vita shipments pre-April.

I think they did, cant find the link though.

like I said ps2 shipments are errartic.  Last year in one of the quarters they shipped a strangely high amount of ps2's.  I'll find it if I can.

PS2 sales has been on decline since FY11, even holyday season didnt had any increase over previous quarter. Thats why i just dont see almost double increase possible, maybe little bit. But only Sony can confirm this by releasing numbers soon enough.

PS2 shipments have been like this for the past 4 years:

2008: 1.5 / 2.5 / 2.5 / 1.4
2009: 1.6 / 1.9 / 2.1 / 1.7
2010: 1.6 / 1.5 / 2.1 / 1.2
2011: 1.4 / 1.2 / 0.9 / 0.6
2012: approx 1.1m

They are not Q3 centric anymore like other consoles.

Turkish is in full defence mode today... lol

Anyway, broken down, I'd say 1.7m for PS3 and 1.1m for PS2 as Sony stated both were down.

so lowest qtr 1 PS3 shipments for some time.

Yes both are down because last Q1 they sold 3.2m combined, and this 2.8m. I dont see PS2 selling 1.1m this quarter, must likely PS3 sold 2m. We should get real numbers soon because combined these numbers doesnt make any sense.

Guesstimating 1.5m for PS3? Awesome, PS2 sold more than the current gen consoles except for PS3. King still marches on.

So it looks like PS3 did 1.7-1.8m while PS2 did 1.1m, great numbers, whatever happens neither PS2 nor PS3 drop as hard as the competition.

Doesn't make a sense. If 360 was overshipped last year then it would be undershipped last quarter.

Who cares about the PS2?
