Forums - Gaming - From the WTF Files: Kojima says videogames shouldn't try to tell a story

Some games do well without story lines, such as Mario and Pokemon.
but other games need to have interesting storylines otherwise I won't be impressed, unless the gameplay is very good. I like suspense in my games, like not knowing what will happen next, or if there is a plot twist or something.

An example of a game with a bad storyline is Assassins Creed. Altair made his own mistakes, the result was his fault. The majority of the story was motivated my Altairs selfishness and greed to reclaim his title. The story did not interest me in the slightest. I forced myself to finish it, and the only thing I enjoyed was the surprise with the "apple" orb/device at the end of the game, because I didn't expect it.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

right, actually, ive always thought MGS stories were pretty lame...
for me greatest stories in vgs are from jrpgs

Yeah... right

Like what jRPGS? Don´t say Final Fantasy

Odin Sphere and Front Mission 3 off the top of my head. Ironically both have some gameplay flaws that keep them away from being great games. And I don't care that much about storytelling in videogames btw.

OT: Should I rate Snatcher according to its interactivity and not to its story? OK then.

And... empathy? empathy is for movies.

What makes videogames great and differentiates them from other audiovisual media is that feeling when you're kicking ass because you're doing things right. Satisfaction some call it. So hard to find these days, buried under tons of hand holding, ridiculously easy games, messy controls, neverending cinematics and overall bad gameplay.

So in other words, he has been trolling everyone this whole time. Laughing at everyone who likes the stories in his games lol

More likely it was just lost in translation a bit

Pokemon Games. They have the best stories of all.

OT: Hahahahahahahahaha. *catches breath* HAHAHAHAHA! I'm sorry but, this has to be a miss-translation.

What's wrong with beating up preschoolers to become the champion? Great story if you ask me.

I agree that games, tv, movies etc should all focus more on character and emotion to have higher immersion and enjoyment for viewer.

Story is not some elevated concept. It is a simple concept that exists at all levels (story being told, story of it being watched and interpreted, storise being implied or assumed, etc) and I don't think saying shouldn't try to tell a story means that a story isn't being told. I think Kojima meant his goal is to achieve immersion on character/emotion level... some connection between player and the character being controlled.

He doesn't want competence.

Guys this is bullshit! The story is what seperates good games from great games.

yes, but the story doesnt have to be a 40min video.

I stopped listening to Kojima when he said MGS1 was the last Metal Gear and then made MGS2 which was the last Metal Gear and then made MGS3 which was the last Metal Gear and then made MGS4 which was THE LAST Metal Gear and then made Peacewalker which was "MGS5" and then reported that they were working on MGS5.
