Survey: Half of Mobile Gamers Choose Mobile Devices as Their Primary Home Platform

Games in the morning, games in the evening, games at supper time. A new study by PopCap and independent research firm Information Solutions Group revealed that a growing number of mobile gamers are adopting their smartphone and/or tablet as their primary home gaming platform. In other words, move over Xbox 360: now mobile gamers are parking themselves on the couch, too.

50% of the 2,301 survey participants (all located in the United States and UK) admitted that their mobile devices get more hands-on time than their game consoles, PCs, or handheld gaming devices. That number jumped to 57% among respondents that own a tablet exclusively.

What’s it mean? According to PopCap’s Vice President of Worldwide Publishing, Dennis Ryan, it means that mobile gaming is definitely nosing in on territory that’s long been occupied by stationary systems.

“We already know that people play mobile games ‘on the go,’ but now we are seeing mobile gamers largely favor their mobile devices for home use,” said Ryan. “If you add the fact we are seeing a deluge of new gamers coming in through mobile, we believe mobile gaming is invading the last bastion of video game consoles and personal computers: the home.”

Aside from revealing that mobile games aren’t necessarily snatched up and consumed on the go like so many bags of fast food, the survey also highlighted some of the unusual places where we like to play mobile games. 8% of the survey’s respondents admitted they’ve played during a class, and 9% confirmed that they’ve played during a sporting event.

Your Deity knows that you play Angry Birds during worship services, by the way.

Over in the “Stop It Now” corner are the 10% of combined respondents that ‘fessed up to playing mobile games during worship services, in movie theaters, and while driving.

The survey was conducted between April 25 and May 1 2012 via 2,301 online questionnaires collected across the US and UK. For a breakdown of the numbers, take a look at the complete study published on Information Solutions Group’s website.

Does your mobile device get as much hands-on loving as your console, PC, and/or dedicated handheld device (like the 3DS and/or Vita)? Or are you pretty much rocking the mobile games whenever you have a free moment, period?

I'm the immediate reaction will be that console games are still selling just fine, but remember that disruption starts by competing with non-consumption...
