Forums - Nintendo - Developer: the Wii U controller can’t be used as a gimmick

Now lets watch this new be ignored all around.

Developer NetherRealm is busy working on Injustice: Gods Among Us, a fighting game slated for release on the Wii U and other consoles in 2013. And they’re looking to use the new Wii U GamePad controller in innovative ways, instead of just presenting it as a gimmick.

“We’re going to have some conversation about the Wii U’s unique controller and how to use it in a fighting game that’s not just a gimmick” says NetherRealm’s Ed Boon to The Verge. He commented that the obvious thing would be to simply add the secret moves on the touchscreen where the player would just press them and fire off the moves. He notes that the new controller has to do more than that, and that they’re still working on how to implement the tablet controls. “It’s certainly not something that we’ve cracked yet”, he said. Injustice: Gods Among Us is a fighting game set in the DC Comics universe, made by the same people who did Mortal Kombat. For more on the game, check out some Injustice: Gods Among Us screenshots.

It’s great to hear that developers are taking the new tablet controller seriously, rather than just a gimmick where they can add the obvious buttons and features. The Wii had a big problem with cheap shovelware games that used the motion controls as a gimmick.

The developer is saying they have to make a conscious effort to not make it seem like a gimmick, that's not a good thing. It's good that that effort is being made though.

It's nice too see some developers not using the GamePad as a gimmick, unfortunately that doesn't mean everyone will not use it as a such. It's like the wiimote, some games use it in interesting and "not gimmicky" ways (Skyward Sword, Metroid Prime 3) but other games do use it as a gimmick

Nintendo and PC gamer

Misleading thread title. Thank you for wasting 1 minute of my life.

Well, either way, it's still refreshing to see developers give Wii U a chance as opposed to how they viewed the Wii. We'll how creative they make use of the Wii U gamepad because so far all I keep hearing from a number of developers is use "Maps" and "Inventory" screen. I know this isn't saying much right now since we still have much to learn of the Wii U but so far ZombiU is the only game that showed different ways of using the gamepad. It's not much but hopefully, we'll see more creativity as time passes.

Personally, having maps and menu's on the pad leaving the TV cludder free sounds great to me. Just like the HD Zelda video from last year's E3. The biggest Nintendo haters have to agree. Even if it's in secret.

If they make special moves and stuff easier to do by putting them on the gamepad, I will choose the Wii U version over others. I just have a entry barrier with fighting games that require too much controller dexterity or memorizing some ackward control sequence.

Glad to see they are looking into more options than just that... but if they just keep it to the simple and making things easier for user options then that will be a big plus for the Wii U.

Most gamers and analysts alike seem to misunderstand gimmick and innovation anyways. All I hear about gamepad's usage are inventory and maps. The most we've seen from the gamepad's usage is Ubisoft's Rayman Legends and ZombiU.

Ubisoft, Imagine that.

well we already knew that devs were looking for ways to bring new experiences with the controller ( although its good to hear another confirm that )... beyond that nowhere in the article ( from what i'm seeing ) has a dev saying that the controller can't be used as a gimmick ( well the person would be stupid anyway for speaking for everyone developing for the wii u )

It will be used as a gimmick...

wii was the #1 selling console for three years, and it was still used as a dumping ground for shovelware gimmicky motion controlled party games

I cannot see any outcome for the wiiu where it is treated as anything other than a gimmick, playing "catch up" to PS4/720...(or maybe catch up to PS3/360)
