Forums - Microsoft - Xbox "has a shot at owning the living room"

GamesIndustry International

At VentureBeat's MobileBeat 2012 conference today, Xbox president Don Mattrick and Kleiner Perkins partner Bing Gordon took to the stage to talk about gaming and Microsoft's Xbox brand. Gordon insisted that the brand and Xbox Live are Microsoft's big winners, comparing Xbox Live to Apple's iTunes.

"Microsoft has to try to make Xbox live the real crossover service for all gamers. Nobody's done a game network as well as Xbox…in fact, iTunes and Xbox are two of the biggest successes in the consumer Internet," he said. "Xbox needs to be a platform like Office or Windows."

"Google owns eyeballs. Apple owns ears and fingertips. With Xbox, Microsoft has a shot at owning the living room," Gordon added.

Mattrick mentioned that Xbox SmartGlass was integral to the platform's continued growth. He also confirmed to VentureBeat that Halo 4 would connect to the Microsoft Surface tablet using SmartGlass.

"In the past five years, Xbox went from number three to number one [in the home video-game console race], and we took Xbox Live from nothing to north of 40 million users," Mattrick said.

"With Smart Glass we'll add a very simple idea: context and intelligence and sharing between different devices."

I took from this SmartGlass for Halo 4... I wonder how they'll integrate.

I think the SmartGlass is just coming too late. The 360 has been out for around 7 years; I don't see this helping them that much really...

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Ok they are 30 Millions behind the Nintendo Wii
Sony is outselling them for 4 years in a row now - Only the CoD and Halo month every year is saving them(shows how pathetic the whole console race is if you can maintain your place thanks to such an easy to impress community) every time otherwise Sony would have overtaken them in a long time. But the truth is Sony is selling more worldwide and the PS3 is the console were the most Software is sold nowadays.

They aren't Number 1 anywhere except on the things were you are forced to use their stuff(Windows on PC for games cause Apple is to stupid otherwise everyone would switch to them)

And please don't call me a fanboy - Those are facts.Nintendo is Number 1 and Sony is outselling them but Microsoft can keep the distance cause of 1 strong month per year in the USA with either CoD or Halo.
This is the truth and no one can deny that.On the other side Microsoft is talking always about being number one RIGHT NOW even if the numbers show they aren't.

I think XBox 360 with XBox Live was very compelling when it launched in 2005 and it grew incrementally in value every year since

PS3 started with relatively poor value in 2006 with shoddy ports of 3rd party titles and online services that lacked trophies and cross-play chat. Now 3rd party titles are as good or better, and online is exceptionally good with most new games available digital, online gameplay remaining free, and really the only missing feature is cross-play chat.

Wii was just weak in online and 3rd party support for core gamers and who knows whether Wii U will begin to close that gap or not but no one should under estimate Nintendo.

I don't think any of them own the living room across the board but in my case video games own the living room with Netflix a distant second. I use the PS3 for non-gaming things like Netflix, Vudu, Amazon Instant Video and the like because it works perfectly on there and I don't have to have XBox Live Gold membership to use those features. The Wii is also free for such stuff but gives 480p instead of 720p / 1080p.

Obviously it is about USA.  Obviously 18 months being the best console may them allow to do that...   Don't you get it?  MS does not care about the rest of the world.   Second or third place at the end of the generation worldwide is not that important.....Being number 1 in the biggest market is important and yes it looks like they have the possibility to being the best selling console in the USA for this generation.  Sony on the other hand is trying to be number 2 worldwide so badly that they even give everything away for free but that is another discussion.

Don Mattrick is an blithering idiot and Gordon is headed in that direction as well. Comparing Xbox Live to Itunes? What a jackass. Zune was a failure. I highly doubt that Xbox Live brings in as much yearly money as Itunes on a yearly basis. They sell movies, shows, games galore on that thing and its revenue is publicized by the media on a level Xbox Live will probably never see.

It will probably more focused on the 720.

You highly doubt?  Dude with Xbox live Gold alone they make 2 billion in revenue.     Itunes is bigger yeah but possible not that big like you imagined 4-6 billions in revenue for the last year.
