What I do is I put some small wooden blocks under the four corners of my PS3, and it keeps it elevated about an inch. It's a lot less warm than it was before and I haven't had any problems with the console freezing since.
Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.
Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash
