Heck no!. In my eyes, the British are backwards. What kind of civilized people exalt one family above others? Royalty is BS. The Queen is BS. I'd say we should end their reign once and for all, but the Prince guy seems to be legitimately a good guy. He served in the military after all, and he has done good charity work over the world. Maybe it's time for the Queen to get out and give England a King. Even then, royalty is still BS.
Also, their accent is awful and they have poor taste in sports just like every other European nation. I want to distinguish myself as far away from them pesky Europeans while still acknowledging that we are still friends and we all have the same goal(contain China and Russia).

I don't think the Royal Family actually still reigns Britain...

Of course they still reign (if they didn't then they wouldn't be the Royal family), but they don't really have much say in the running of the country or anything. As I said earlier they are basically just a tourist trap now. They bring in quite a bit of money to the country... I believe it is more than they are paid through taxes etc, so ultimately they are a profitable venture, and without them the money would go to the government, who aren't exactly great at solving problems without massive overhead. Having said that though I'm sure the Royals could function just as well on much less income.

Why in the world would you want to see the Royal Family? O_o

Ah, I thought they were just purely to function as "Figure-Heads" for parades and such. Almost like a Celebrity.

They do. That's the point.

And maybe people want to see the Queen because she's exactly that? You know over 1 billion, or 1,000 million (around 1/7th of the world's population) watched the Diamond Jubilee celebrations last month? There's only 65 million in the UK, and only (I stress only) 28million watched it here. So where did those other 972,000,000 come from?

She still matters, but more as a figurehead. She has little to no powers.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I did my American duty yesterday and got drunk while barbecuing. So drunk that I passed out in bed while I still had friends over. Pretty good at entertaining guests...

Anyways, there is a ton of information that I need to learn. I need history channel series on England!

One question though.. I believe I have asked it before on the forums but what do you guys prefer to be called? The UK or just England? Do people from England prefer to state that they are from the UK or just England? The few British I've met just state England not the UK. Also, should I refer to you as British or English? Or does it even matter?

I am making this post to celebrate the 4th of July.  Here are a few reasons why England is better than USA.

The British Pound is more valuable than our shitty dollar

Your multi-party system is far superior than our stupid two-party system

Your use of the English language is far superior (sound smarter (except people near the border of Scotland, I can't understand you guys...))

You kicked out most of your religious nuts to our country thus saving yourselves from the likes of the Puritans and the eventual evangelical Christians that were to come

"No taxation without representation" was the major cry for our split but it turns out that under USA rule about the same thing is happening.  Here is a good example of how well we spend our taxpayers money... In Texas they use taxpayer money to build a road then they turn it into a toll road (double taxation).  They then sell the toll road to a private company (usually foreign).

You are less hated around the world than us (usually most people are suffice to burn just the American flag)

You don't try and act like the world police force

I will list a few more later..  However, I believe that the USA would be a far better place if we were still under British rule.  Anyone else feel the same?

Only some ignorant person would write this. You people from Europe are a real curse to the world. You steal this country, enslave my people, and some how now you think because no one can see your face you can write what ever you want online. Here is something I wish you all just stayed in Europe and left the rest of the world the hell along. Things would have been better.

I think I have an idea that should be of benefit to everyone.

Let the US come under Australian rule. We have preferential voting (resulting in a political system that is better than a two-party system, although it's not quite multi-party - suffice it to say, neither of the two major parties holds the balance of power in either house of government right now), a dollar comparable to the US dollar, better grasp of English than America does, and better representation (and higher taxes, but also better results from those taxes). we're one of the countries that most in the world actually like, and we're one of the few developed countries to survive the GFC unscathed.

And while we do happen to share the same queen as England, she is actually the Queen of Australia, a separate title from Queen of England (and it's likely that Australia will become a republic once Charles takes the throne). Oh, and despite having no official separation of church and state, we have much better actual separation than America does (while England actually has an official state church - called the Church of England).

If you fear that you'll lose things like your national pastimes, never fear - we already have two major football codes in Australia, a third one won't phase us, and while we prefer cricket, we would view the refusal of baseball to be just not cricket. :P

We do ask that you stop calling prawns "shrimp" and to stop thinking that we barbecue our prawns routinely (damn you, Paul Hogan).

If you feel that Australia is too far from the US, then I'd recommend Canada as a fallback country to become subject to.

1). It's better to say the UK, that way you won't offend the Scotish, Welsh or Irish.
2). People from England generally prefer to say England.
3). British as it will offend less people. Say to Scotish person in the wrong part of Edinburgh or Glasgow, they're English instead of British and you'll get one hell of a punch.

My word. Some people on this site are unbearably liberal.

There are probably quite a few English who refer to themselves as English before British (or will say "from England" instead of "from the UK"), some will be in ignorance, some out of some sense of patriotism (I never understand patriotism in any country, I don't see how someone can be proud of being from a specific country unless you had a major hand in forming that country) Some maybe just say it to be more specific.

I think the percentage of people from England that use British or UK more is probably much higher than those of the other regions. The Welsh and especially the Scots are far more likely to name their own region when asked where they are from, and a lot of Scots don't even like being called British, never mind mistaking them as English.

As for N.Ireland, I'm not really sure... I'm sure some of them will refer to themselves as Irish and some will call themselves British (though I think both would normally say "from Northern Ireland")

To sum up:
 - English people naturally won't care if you call them British or English... some of the patriotic may take offense if you mistake them as Scottish.
 - Welsh people prefer Welsh (of course) but won't care if you call them British, and I don't think would take much offense at being mistaken as English either.
 - Scottish people are probably the group most offended at being mistook, If you can't recognise them as Scottish then it's best to as "Are you from the UK" rather than "Are you British"
 - N.Irish I think prefer being called Irish, and would probably be offended if you called them English, less if you called them Scottish, but otherwise won't mind.
 - Rep. Irish may not like being called British though, and most from outside of Ireland would have a hard time distinguishing between the different irish accents.

As such, if you are capable of recognising the appropriate accent, you can guess about specific regions. Otherwise the least offensive thing to ask would be "Are you from the UK" Ultimately most won't really care if you mistake them, though if you find yourself in Glasgow I definately wouldn't go around asking people if they are English

So move there.

Well it depends who you are referring to. If you're talking about the English, call them that and say England. British is a bit weird because it includes other countries that have their own identities and customs - and when Americans use it they are most often referring to the English only.

Canada has marijuana, Australia has big ugly fucking bugs.

Canada it is then.
