But anyone who says "but N64/GC had Mario too!" doesn't get what we're talking about. NSMBU is the 2nd biggest launch killer-app for a console since Super Mario World, 20 years ago.

Third, actually. You forgot Wii Sports - because let's admit it, that was a true killer-app.

But it is true, NSMBU has the potential to drive Wii U sales out of the gate about as fast as Wii Sports did. It's no accident or coincidence that both previous NSMB titles have sold over 25 million copies. Coupled with NintendoLand, there's serious potential. They just need to make sure there's a new Wii U Sports before sales start to taper off, and they're pretty much guaranteed better sales than any previous Nintendo console other than the Wii. Whether it can reach or surpass the Wii will depend on more than just that, though.

Mario is a killer app, it can sell a console by itself. Show me the sales for Wii Spots games sold seperately from the console itself.

In Japan, it sold 3.77 million copies. That's an attach rate of over 30%. And remember, Wii Sports wasn't bundled in Japan. The only game to sell better on Wii in Japan was NSMB Wii, and of course, that wasn't a launch title.

And clearly you've forgotten the number of news stories, etc, about people getting Wii and Wii Sports.

Mario is a bigger system seller for more regular gamers. Wii Sports is a bigger system seller for those who play less regularly.

Damn Iwata. I still don't forgive you for teasing me about Smash Bros.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

I will add that nintendo is simply following 360's lead. They seen how many 3rd parties xbox was able to grab. This has been forgotten but remember how many third parties 360 didn't have before the 360? They have done a great job doing this and Nintendo has not put it's head in the sand. They are launching early and also I heard it was easy to program for. Both things done by 360. However they didn't know ps3 cell was going to be so hard to program for.

Launching first and  having easy to program hardware isn't something that started with the 360...
