Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft secures rights to Xbox 8 domains

Microsoft have kind of been stuck between a rock and a hard place with naming their consoles. I don't know if it was urban legend or actual fact that they named it the 360 because naming it 'Xbox 2' would make it seem inferior to 'PS3'. But it left them with a big gap of 'What next?'

8 makes sense. Windows 8, all that jazz. Still, it feels like a backwards step from the 360 in exactly the thing they were trying to avoid (inferior name to other products, in this case their own older product?)

Also, it will probably just seem random to some people. Maybe that's Microsoft's approach to numbering consoles. Scattergunning numbers. Xbox 912 next? Meh.

Not so much when windows 9 comes out in 2 years

I have a feeling things are going to change after this next OS.

The symbol for infinity is identical to the number 8. Be prepared for the...

Xbox Infinite

I was kind of hoping they'd just call it the Call of Halo Gears... box.

I doubt it's the name of the console, probably just did it to be safe for the future

Actually the next console could be called Xbox Live (as in living). Sony could re-brand the console. Call it Sony Revolution. And Nintendo will name their system something dumb...like Wii U...

your input is valued here.

....uh, thank you?

Just because you chose to quote a famous dead person does not mean that you are some type of intellect nor does it mean that the quote in question is correct.

It very likely will be their gaming platform across multiple hardware.  Look for Windows 8 to also be able to play XBox games.

Calling the next XBox console the 8, makes more sense than calling it the 720.  Why would Microsoft call it an XBox 720?  Does 720 stand for anything?

Edit: Ok, thinking on this more, they register XBox 8, because they will go with a symbol that looks like 8 or infinite, a mobius loop.  They won't call it the XBox 8, but the 8 will be along the lines of what Prince changed his name to.  The 8 will actually be a symbol like infniity or a mobius loop.

It will be a way to say infinite.  Also, at the core of an 8 or the infinity symbol is an X: cx)
