Microsoft have kind of been stuck between a rock and a hard place with naming their consoles. I don't know if it was urban legend or actual fact that they named it the 360 because naming it 'Xbox 2' would make it seem inferior to 'PS3'. But it left them with a big gap of 'What next?'
8 makes sense. Windows 8, all that jazz. Still, it feels like a backwards step from the 360 in exactly the thing they were trying to avoid (inferior name to other products, in this case their own older product?)
Also, it will probably just seem random to some people. Maybe that's Microsoft's approach to numbering consoles. Scattergunning numbers. Xbox 912 next? Meh.
