If my English understanding is right, then 'catching up' means one already have done something and the other is following him in the same path to 'catch him'. Sony now owns Gaikai, what does Microsoft has? Who is playing catch up in reality?

MS allready has the infrastructure. They just didnt reveal anything to us. Time isnt right yet.

Sony had to blow 380 million just to be on the same level as MS. Thing is Sony shouldnt be spending right now either.

And I have a crystal ball with wish granting fairies......I just haven’t shown anyone yet.  Bottom line is that MS haven’t revealed anything which means they have nothing. Sure they have an infrastructure in place that should be able to support cloud gaming but what good is it if they aren't using it. Sony just purchased an up and running company that works very well. This makes it very easy for them to integrate what they just purchased into their already up and running infrastructure while making a return on their investment immediately through sales. MS have yet to show any streaming service for games. As for Nintendo, they are so far behind on the online front it's almost better for them to stay out. Unless they come strong and offer everything MS and Sony have already day one for WiiU. This is a very inexpensive purchase for Sony with some very big opportunities. Not only can they use the service for the PS3/4, they can use it as is for streaming games on the PC, Cell phones, Tablets etc. It fits pretty well into their current mobile platform push.

First and foremost do any of you even know the technology behind a cloud service? One of the reasons why people are saying that ms does not have to respond to Sony is because ms as a business is in the forefront of technology when it comes to cloud services. MS already have the streaming technology for 1080p video. MS already have the huge data centers, hardware and software and the platform to host the services.

Gaikai is a future investment for Sony not something that will be a game changer because Google, MS, Apple already have the infrastructure to do what Sony has purchased. This purchased by Sony gives them the ability to stay competitive when streaming cloud services work consistently enough for the current net infrastructure.

I believe what people need to understand there will be a lot of work Sony will need to do in order to get Gaikai integrated with their own network. This is only the beginning if the investment and if it takes to long to get everything up and running, it gives time to the competition who have already such systems up and running to bring out a solid product first. One of the dangers Sony can face is bolting on a different system to their network only to produce a clunky product while the competition has a well integrated system that trumps their efforts.

I don't know if it's relevent but what about RemoteFX & Azure?

Im not gonna get into this yet again. But that bold is among the most ignorant statements ive read in a while.

A corporation can keep secrets.....they can have things in the works and not announce it until they see fit. Lol why would this news even exist that Sony is playing catch up if MS had nothing? lol gimme a break.

Its funny how people here think corporations are now all of a sudden supposed to be free and 100% open with their plans.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Also funny how this became a pissing contest between two fan boys teams i.e. FUCK NO MICROSOFT XBOX ISNT BETTER THAN SONY PS.

Again I don't get what you guys are going on about.

Patents? Really? You do realize ALL companies have a huge amount of patents right? Have you gone through sony patents to confirm they do not? I assure you they will as well

Sony have brought cloud to gaming as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but they were the first to bring it to consoles. They already use it in their other services and devices. But by definition to 'catch up' there should be something material to catch up to. MS has shown nothing comparable to Gaikai. Sony now have Gaikai's tech and all their assets with this investment. Fact of the matter is you and sales both are using things that have yet to be shown as justification for this statement, which is nonsesense.

Did you go to the link i posted. MS has sold their cloud services to other companies, to regualr consumers, and to governments. Until sony can offer their clouds services in that way they are playing catch up. They bought Gaikai to cath up, you just mentioned it as a way they are ahead of ms, had they not bought Gaikai they could not have used it to catch up like they did. Hence them using Gaikai to catch up. I agree MS does not offer streaming of games, but neither does sony, gaikai offers streaming of demos. MS has infrastructure for cloud services and currently sell cloud services. Does sony do that? did they do that before they bought gaikai? Cathcing up for sony is not in the console space but in cloud computing in general. I am not trying to knock sony here, it appears they may the first to bring streaming games to consoles, but that doesn't mean they dont have a lot to do to cathc up to ms as far as cloud services go.

You see you are spreading your focus all over the place now. Sony does have cloud based services so I'm sure they have infrastructure as well.

Fact of the matter is this whole situation is about Gaikai yes? What does Gaikai do? Have MS shown anything similar to that so far? Answer is No. It doesn't matter if MS have cloud services for fisherman in alaska, the topic at hand is about Gaming. To say sony is catching up with this perticular investment, then MS should have something before this to show for, that compares to what Gaikai is doing. They do not. Sony do not care about all areas of cloud, they are not MS and hence their business focuses are different. That is why you should stop taking this PR about MS and cloud in other industries and focus on the investment at hand. It's like saying Nintendo is playing catch up to touch screen with the DS or something because MS had touch screen patents and whatnot beforehand.

Before sony bought Gaikai their cloud service was not as robust as mS was it? Now that they bought gaikai their cloud service is better. They used the purchase of gaikai to catch up to waht ms has been building. dont know how else to explain it. Unless you think that sony's cloud services match MS before their purchase of gaikai.

@the bolded: how is that even related here? Sony have done well in the implimentation of cloud where it has mattered to 'them' as a company. These are two very different companies with multiple areas of focus but not many of them overlap. Sure MS have done work with cloud in other areas but that does not matter to sony. To them cloud in music, games, and movies are what's important. No way are they playing catch up to MS in that regard now are they? It's all about perspective and the OP article is full of PR spin. Fact of the matter is Sony have made the first major move into cloud console gaming with gaikai. MS have not.

@Criss: yep and I guessed exactly what your post will be like as well :P Typical

For the bolded: Is that not what we are talking about?

MS is doing alot of stuff with music and the cloud. They are getting ready to let you host your music on a cloud service and play it from anywhere, just working out the deals with the RIAA. MS and sony will clash a lot on cloud services, also with google and apple. They all want to consumers to use their box/device/cell phone/ what ever you use to display  their info and they want consumers to use their service (or cloud). I hope to see a lot of compition there. Things are just getting started. But I will agree alot of what MS has talked about is not launched yet. I dont want to keep a pointless arguing going though so I will leave it at this. It does look like Sony will be the first to bring streaming games to consoles as MS has not talked about that as far as I know. But in the other areas you should check out some of MS anouncements, along with Google and Apple. They all have a big fight coming and ill all be more even more focused on each othr in every area of their business. Sony has  huge advantage in that they are content holders of almost all the music and alot of movies so no matter what they will win out in licening that content, but i think they are the furthest behind in infrastructer. Glad we were able to have this disussion.

Again, until they announce what they have, they don't "have" it. Like I said in another post, I am sure they have something in the works, they have had things similar for years. The FACT is that they have not shown us anything. So until that happens nobody, including analysts should state another company is playing catch up to a company who doesn't have anything out to catch. It would be like saying "We believe Sony has been developing a console since 1998, Microsoft will be playing catch up to Sony when they release their newly announced Xbox later this summer." What is ignorant is for people to assume that Microsoft has some super cloud service they are just waiting to drop. The only facts here are that Sony has purchased an up and running company. For all you know, Sony already had a service close to complete or already complete and just wanted to utilize the hardware and space occupied by Gaikai. We don't know. Just like we don't know what if anything Microsoft has or will have in the future.

Since you brought it up, Sony has had Music and Video unlimited for quite awhile now. That allows streaming of Video and Music from the "Cloud". It allows access to all of your music as well. Just sayin.
