Forums - Gaming - Sony is "playing catch up" to Microsoft with Gaikai acquisition - UKIE chairman

It's true that Microsoft has made much headway in the realm of cloud computing, but in the realm of a dedicated video game streaming service I have yet to see it. True it could have been in the works, in which case Sony would be playing catch up, but ultimately if Sony comes out with it first it's the early bird catching the worm.

Ultimately whether they're playing catch up or not, they're the ones that came up with a working solution for streamed gaming first (since Gaikai can stream AC:Brotherhood already) and that's what actually matters.

Again I don't get what you guys are going on about.

Patents? Really? You do realize ALL companies have a huge amount of patents right? Have you gone through sony patents to confirm they do not? I assure you they will as well

Sony have brought cloud to gaming as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but they were the first to bring it to consoles. They already use it in their other services and devices. But by definition to 'catch up' there should be something material to catch up to. MS has shown nothing comparable to Gaikai. Sony now have Gaikai's tech and all their assets with this investment. Fact of the matter is you and sales both are using things that have yet to be shown as justification for this statement, which is nonsesense.

Did you go to the link i posted. MS has sold their cloud services to other companies, to regualr consumers, and to governments. Until sony can offer their clouds services in that way they are playing catch up. They bought Gaikai to cath up, you just mentioned it as a way they are ahead of ms, had they not bought Gaikai they could not have used it to catch up like they did. Hence them using Gaikai to catch up. I agree MS does not offer streaming of games, but neither does sony, gaikai offers streaming of demos. MS has infrastructure for cloud services and currently sell cloud services. Does sony do that? did they do that before they bought gaikai? Cathcing up for sony is not in the console space but in cloud computing in general. I am not trying to knock sony here, it appears they may the first to bring streaming games to consoles, but that doesn't mean they dont have a lot to do to cathc up to ms as far as cloud services go.

You see you are spreading your focus all over the place now. Sony does have cloud based services so I'm sure they have infrastructure as well.

Fact of the matter is this whole situation is about Gaikai yes? What does Gaikai do? Have MS shown anything similar to that so far? Answer is No. It doesn't matter if MS have cloud services for fisherman in alaska, the topic at hand is about Gaming. To say sony is catching up with this perticular investment, then MS should have something before this to show for, that compares to what Gaikai is doing. They do not. Sony do not care about all areas of cloud, they are not MS and hence their business focuses are different. That is why you should stop taking this PR about MS and cloud in other industries and focus on the investment at hand. It's like saying Nintendo is playing catch up to touch screen with the DS or something because MS had touch screen patents and whatnot beforehand.

Before sony bought Gaikai their cloud service was not as robust as mS was it? Now that they bought gaikai their cloud service is better. They used the purchase of gaikai to catch up to waht ms has been building. dont know how else to explain it. Unless you think that sony's cloud services match MS before their purchase of gaikai.

SONY: "We have just purchased Gaikai and now have a pathway into the world of digital streaming for Video games all done through the Cloud".

Microsoft: "We have nothing to show anyone, but we did it first, we had the digital streaming over the Cloud first. Like I said, we can't prove it, but I sit here today and say that Sony is playing catch up to us right now in this field."

I'll just file this one away under "Damage Control".

Means nothing without any sort of tangible proof displaying what they are claiming.

Where is this streaming gaming content across multiple devices?

This bogus PR can in no way be take as fact when as of this moment it truly is nothing more than empty words, regardless of whether or not the do other things in the Cloud scene because hey guess what, SONY does stuff in the Cloud scene as well.

No one said sony doesn't. All i am saying is that MS does more in the cloud and has a better infrastrucure for it. Hence why sony would be catching up. And again before they bought gaikai sony did not stream games. So they used gaikai to catch up. now they can do that. but could not before.

We don't even know how Sony is actually going to leverage the Gaikai deal, so it's too early to say who is catching up to whom or in what capacity.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Let me know if I am doing this right...

Nintendo : "Here we would like to announce the Wii Mote gaming controller. With it you can play games via motion. We are ushing in a new era of video games."

SONY : "Nintendo is playing catch up to us here at SONY Entertainment. We have been hard at work developing a controller that enables motion gaming to millions of Playstation gamers around the world, an effort that we have proven to be a big supporter of with the continued support for the Eyetoy motion controller. Unfortunately we have nothing to show you just yet, but rest assured that we do in fact have something in the works."

Using Move as the example, would this now work?

It's a game streaming service that can stream the likes of Assassin's creed. Odds it'll be used to stream games for all of Sony's products, including its consoles. Just a wild guess.

Right, but we don't know, and we really can't know, except for the fact that it was acquired by SCE specifically rather than Sony as a whole.

The point is, we can't rush to judgment until we see where Sony's actually going with this, then we can pick it apart as we choose.

Really though? It's pretty obvious what it's there for given what we know about Gaikai. (it play AC)

Why would they invest in an infrastructure taylored to full gen 7 gaming experiences if they won't offer that to all connected devices (as stated in the related press release)?

I think it's far to carry on, but I don't want to harass you. To me, the roadmap is drawn without a shadow of a doubt.
