The fact that both Wii remotes are having the same problem is very suspicious. Maybe there is a mobile device that's sending out a disturbing signal? (similar to the signal that tells them to turn off after the Wii has been turned off)

That's what I thought too, but nothing has changed in between when they worked and now.  All of our wireless devices are in a different room from the Wii, and the only thing that I thought could possibly be interfering is my clock radio, which is one of those satellite things that automatically sets itself when you plug it in.  I unplugged it, though, and no dice.

My wiimotes are pretty old. like 6 years old. They definitely can't last another generation with the WiiU



 Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

i was thinking the same thing, but i believe it might just be a problem with the WII itself

i was thinking the same thing, but i believe it might just be a problem with the WII itself


Hmm... I don't know. Then there shouldn't be any problem to turn them on as long as the Wii is unplugged.

Hmm... I don't know. Then there shouldn't be any problem to turn them on as long as the Wii is unplugged.

i find it strange that BOTH controllers wouldnt be working.

Have you tried contacting Nintendo about the problem?
They might have a better idea on this.

You sure you pressed and holded the sync button on the Wii for at least 15 seconds? So that it actually cleared all the synced wiimotes properly .

Except that no Wii remotes will turn on without the Wii having power.

@spenderz... For the 5 seconds the Wii remotes are on... are you able to use them (can you point at the screen and such)? If not then they may have lost sync with the Wii... and if they don't get a return signal from the Wii they turn off.

While it's turned on and in the Wii menu, open the panel on the front of the Wii (where the SD card slot is) and press the red button, then a.s.a.p. press the red button under the battery cover on one of the Wii remotes (the batteries need to be in of course)

Having said that... that wouldn't explain why the remotes refuse to do anything after they turn off until you take out and replace the batteries.

Edit: (also I just re-read the OP and I missed the part you mentioned about re-synching... sorry. Unless when you say re-synch you mean the soft re-synch, but you would need a working Wii remote to do that with other remotes so I guess not)
