Adobe confirms it won't support Flash on Android 4.1, stops new Flash installs from Google Play on August 15th

Adobe was very public about dropping mobile Flash last fall. In case that wasn't clear enough, the developer just drew a line in the sand: Android 4.1 doesn't, and won't ever, get certification for Flash. The company is stopping short of saying that Flash won't run, but it's evident that Adobe won't help you if the web browser plugin doesn't install (or breaks in spectacular fashion) on that Nexus 7. Just to underscore the point, the firm is also halting new installations of Flash from Google Play as of August 15th. Security updates and other vital patches will continue on for existing users. Any fresh downloads after that fateful day, however, will have to come from Adobe's mausoleum for old versions. The company had already said that HTML5 was the way forward on phones and tablets -- now we know just how quickly it's backing up that claim.

Just another nail in the coffin.

I think the bigger news from the past couple weeks is that OEMs are getting shut out of the tablet market. Once that door closes, one wonders how long before they start getting muscled out of the laptop and smartphone markets.

Flash was a great platform, it is sad news.

My android 4.1 not-so-smart-phone loads flash based websites...

I don't like this at all. Most streams are on flash, so this will be a big loss for my tablet. :(

The stream companies will switch to HTML5 very fast if they start to lose business. The media really, really care about tablets out of all proportion so they will rush to make it work on them.

It was complete overkill for video delivery, too many security holes and too resource heavy.

For long vector animations (e.g. Homestuck) and simple web browser games it worked very well.

Correction, it was an awful platform whose problems were only magnified in the mobile space. 

Flash was good for animations and games, that's it. The platform was terribly misused and as a web developer, I've bee calling for its demise for over a half decade.
