In your opinion, Gamescom is useless outside of price reductions and console variations. In reality, Gamescom is quite an outlet for the EU market to get a look at upcoming stuff (or new announcements - such as Heavy Rain's first gameplay preview in 2008).
Just because Microsoft will be a no-show doesn't make the show useless. They either have nothing major or are saving what they have for next gen. It also doesn't make it any less frustrating for some of their fans.

sure and they can show the same over the internet or on other places. i mean, if they show videos of upcoming games, they can show the video on youtube and those few exclusives you can play...as example everything we saw on e3 could have been released without e3. we just wouldn't have seen a stage then with some pr guys talking crap. and those few games you could play like forza horizan will be available as demo on my xbox. i live only half an hour away from it and i still see it not as bad as peope who will never be there in their life. i got the feeling people who see the biggest importance in gamescom are always those who live like 10k miles away...

With this view, anything game related can be shown over the internet (or anything news worthy - for that matter). We should just rid the world of news papers and television since I can watch most shows on the net and get most news via Yahoo!
Yeah, doesn't really make a strong case. Them not being there isn't a plus for everyone, no matter the spin applied. Them being there, regardless of little may be present, hurts nobody.

since i didn't see a lot of gaming related stuff on television here in germany, yes they could get rid of it and i can see it on the internet or read it in gaming magazines if i want to buy one which not many do anymore. and no, it isn't totally useless, if you show a new console or so you should show that on a stage but if you only show a halo 4 gameplay video on a stage or a beyond video, why do you need a stage for that? i understand that they need a e3 as example to show their new games to the worldwide press and don't have to invite the whole world press to their studio but they did already show their stuff on the e3 so gamescom would be not much more for us people. oh wow i could play the halo demo i already saw by myself for 3 minuts how important...
sure it would be better for the fans if microsoft would be there but in reality, if you have no console or other very important new stuff like sony who has to present vita to more people, it isn't so important to use millions of dollars to be there.
