Forums - Gaming - Developers need to stop being so stupid with new IPs

In an industry where the mainstream games seem to be getting browner and browner, and the space marines are getting fatter and fatter, there is a growing demand for original IPs and innovative gameplay. It’s getting to the point where a new release seems like a novelty if it doesn’t have a number on it, even series like God of War and Gears of War are taking the subtitle approach to their new editions almost like the developers are embarrassed they’ve made so many.

I bet Nintendo doesn't have to worry about that.

Hmm I liked El Shaddai and don't find Super meat boy appealing at all. It also comes down to price and marketing, not a good comparison.
Anyway what does he suggest they do with new IP's. The only thing he mentions is difficulty and as far as I remember El Shaddai had plenty of difficulty levels.

Not every new ip is going to succeed, but many of them do...the article is not very good imo...

I really get tired of the whole "Nintendo this" and "Sony that" or "Microsoft this and that." I would like to find a place where someone can play systems and games without mindless discrimination. Sony produces some good games and consoles, as does Microsoft (though I haven't ever really had an X Box), and Nintendo does as well. Bashing one because you don't like their style is stupid, and it irritates me that I always seem to have to defend my taste in games when everyone is attacking one another. Shouldn't we just enjoy games and critique them without all of this fanboy nonsense?

There are plenty of new ips. If people choose not to play them or buy them thats their fault, but there are plenty of them out there.

Plenty of new IPs out there. ie lollipop chainsaw currently at no 1 worldwide for sales according to this fine site.

I read what was posted. I don't agree. There are plenty of new ips and plenty of them have new gameplay mechanics that are good and not just gimmicks.

Like I said read it. It's not an attack on new IPs, we are for them. It's about new IPs that fail because of bad marketing. We think that some new IPs could do better but try harder to appeal and succeed without changing much. Simple things like a title could put people off. And we talk about the style appealing to the hardcore and then being described to appeal to the casual. There's a conflinct there so it ends up being bought by none.

We simply want new and unique IPs to succeed but the developers/publishers need to give it the best chance possible.
