Not exactly sick of this gen but my interest in gaming has decreased a lot these past years. First the graphics. The graphic of PS3/360 needs an improvment. Aliasing is extremly distracting for me, Otherwise good graphics can be destroyed completly it even affects the gameplay sometimesfor me atleast. (like in FPS)
Even worse is if they try to battle Aliasing like in Assassins Creed 2 where they appearently just blurred the whole picture. I always have the sublime need to put on glasses (don't wear any) to make it clearer.
Just this minor improvment, having good AA in all games would be a noticeable step up. I also hate texture pop ins or even whole objects popping in. A high Draw Distance and AA. Smooth Framerates (stable 30) just "tidy" Graphics. This are the main flaws this gen. Its not even the lack of 1080p those are the main issues. Improving this will make games look and feel way better and this doesn't need monster hardware at all.
Thats the graphical reason we need a next gen and better soon, those small problems get more and more annoying over time.
We also need more Ram+faster Hardware for non graphical reasons. It really limits the Developer in what they can do. Having Epic battles like lets say a War in Skyrim with 1000 NPCs, full forrests with thousands of insects, birds and other animals hunting each other . Or having filled streets in GTA. Or 500 Zombies tearing down the house you are currently in in a Zombie game. All this could be done in the same graphic but adds alot atmosphere to some games. AI routines can become more complex all this adds to an evolution of games,
The physics are also unchanged since this gen started. There was a noticable step between PS2 and 3 and it had effects on the believability of the worlds and the feeling of games. Who knows what they can implement. Just having temperatures and water that actually accumulates in a puddle or freezes over or blocks roads and paths not scripted in games (while extremly complex and ressource hungry it can make a world even more open).
I look forward to a few games this gen. The recipies are the same. Because heavily scripted games need way less power. Upholding the graphics while showing a perfectly collapsing building is a trick to save ressources. Next gen could lead to more openess.I am used to games letting me make limited decisions (it improved over time though) but each gen changes gaming and expands old ways.
We are lightyears away from total creative freedom and gaming will change alot in the next decades. But power is necessary. The PCoffers more of it but the games still don't change at their core. Its a slow development. Pcs sre as strong as their weakest Link. No Gamedesigner can make a game that has extremly complex physics and doesn't run on 90% of all PCs.
The costs are another problem but with new tools and a simpler architecture in the consolesand more Ram the cost for the same game on PS4 will be lower. Uncharted quality will be financable for smaller studios sooner or later.
And the big studios will experiment with new ways or improved ways to sell their games and not just sell their games over graphics especially when the difference is not that obvious. But a GTA were you can blow up a Skyscraper or destroy whole blocks will sell.
All this takes years but everytime we have new consoles games change slowly. The software changes are slow but they happen and without new Hardware the progress stops. This level of gaming is not acceptable forever, new consoles area guarantee something changes, and I am just not impressed by this gen anymore.
Also Interface improvments like the OS (Multitasking fast reactions and other) improve the overall experience. Less loading times hopefully no mandatory installs and more that can't be done because of the Ram.
While I still look forward to a few games I hope this gen ends in 2013 (for Sony and MS), I am sure Sony will improve the PS4 in a way that will make me want to have it. I hope for an evolution next gen, that corrects all the flaws we had this gen and descripts the games and introduces new ways to use AI/Physics in a game, while sustaining "tidy" graphics.
