Forums - Sony - Has the PS3 actually beat the hackers?

People are thinking OP is talking about the outage. He's really talking about people hacking the system in order to play pirated copies of PS3 games. As far as I know, the PS3 is the most secure in terms of that. They have a freakin' Wii emulator for PC now lol, and the 360 has the most downloads for game torrents. But I remember checking this info about a year ago, times could have changed since then..

What do the hackers lost? While Sony lost their reputation and millions of income..

truer words

for real, had the ps3 been hacked like the xbox360 and wii Sony would have made millions and gain a lot of respect rolf, by the way I am still waiting for that incredible homebrew community that everybody was claiming to be the purpose of the hacks not piracy

how is the x360 hacked? as far as i know it is *not* hacked. there are ways to play pirated games but the security-system is not hacked.

again, no - being hacked is different from "you can play games from tpb". the security-system in x360 is in no way hacked but there are several ways to play games without buying :) but the effort by now is quite massive and increases to get more difficult with every system-update.

Did the Xbox 360 Slim ever get cracked? Read somewhere (quite awhile ago) that hacked games could only be played on the non-slim console.

it is still possible to flash the firmware of your odd or use the famous "reset glitch hack". modifying the firmware will most probably get you banned from xbl, rgh is achieved when opening your box and fiddle with your hardware. a "pure" software hack is not available and most probably will never be.

Sony has won against piracy. It IS possible to pirate games for PS3, but the process is so much more complicated than with PS2 that practically no one plays pirated games on PS3 compared to last gen.

Does it really matter how complicated it is ?
I bet many bought their PS2 already with the ability to play pirated games.

It's not so much different now.

I'm Spanish and here at leat 50% of the population had the PS2 pirated, whereas now no one I know pirates games for PS3. I know it's anecdotal evidence but from what I read online and other people they have the same experience.

Now most people who pirate games have a 360, which is why it has decent sales (about 1/2 of PS3 sales here) but its games never chart in the top 10.

Not really.
Hackers (the good ones) have already found several ways to hack the new updated OS time and time again, but they're not releasing it because there is no good reason to do so. (no must have features etc.)
Pirated games can be played with an old OS version. Even the most recent ones that would normally need an OS update. There are also several ways to downgrade your PS3 to the point where you can install a custom firmware.

They're just not creating a new custom firmware so that PSN is safe in case of cheaters.

Incorrect, there is no way fw 4.11 is hacked, jailbreakers are stuck at 3.55 since march 2011. Don't think that they don't release it becoz it has no must have features. There were no must have features either between 3.41 and 3.55.

Post 3.55 games can be played on a cfw 3.55, but only with a 60 buck dongle called TrueBlue, and they release their patches months later after the game is released. Why would you downgrade anyway? You will still need to buy a dongle and wait till they patch the game, on top of that you have no online.

I have a 3.55 cfw console, for my emulators. I actually like playing SNES GBA roms in HD textures on my hdtv :)

For the OP... I would say yes, the hackers have been beaten. The few thousand people with Trueblue dongles don't hurt the PS3 or PSN. The firmwares can't be cracked and jailbreakers can't reach PSN. Sony doesn't even patch the downgrade no more cuz they know 3.55 is useless unless you have a dongle, many people hate TrueBlue becoz pirates are coming from a total free solution to a pricey dongle solution lol.
