Forums - Politics - Glenn Beck calls for increase in charitable giving along with shrinking government. Do you agree?

http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/27/my-take-as-we-shrink-government-lets-grow-charitable-giving/

Pretty much, it takes the usual conservative shrinking the size of government, with an added call to increase charitable giving.  Do you agree with this?  Agreement I am asking is over the call for increased charitable giving.  If government gets shrunk, should people give more to charity, or is that not needed?  Do you feel Glenn Beck is a nosy busybody for calling for this also?

in less than 24 hours after the episode of GBTV (which is a paid internet TV service, not something you get on regular TV) his audience raised money for more than 500,000 meals for the needy. that was in less than 1 day. his audience is some of the most charitable in the world.
conservatives usually are much more charitable than other groups, like left leaning groups

Clearly they are charitable, they're still giving him money after the market decided he wasn't worth keeping on the major networks anymore.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

He left on his own. He wasn't fired from either CNN or FOX

The writing was on the wall by that point, or that was my take on it. He's verifiably insane...

what are you talking about? he was the most watched "news" show in the 5pm time slot. he beat all other of the mainstream news networks, often times combined.

the market was clearly there for him, as he destroyed the competition.

he chose to leave traditional TV because he thought he could accomplish his vision/mission more effectively doing his own thing. because with his own companies he is afforded a lot more flexibility and freedom than he would with the constraints of other companies.

his radio program is still wildly popular as well.

you clearly dont know what you are talking about.

Look up his ratings. The writing wasn't even close to being on the wall.

Nice try though.

good job. ad hominen attacks.

the writing was not on the wall, he had the most popular 5pm slot there was, often times even beating out the other mainstream medias primetime slots.

and he is more popular and brings in more money now and is more listened to now than ever before. he isnt going any where. he is huge.

There needs to be an increase in charitable giving even if you don't get rid of government spending in my opinion.

I wonder if you would see it though.

In general it seems to be shown that when people think welfare is primarily the roll of the government they're more likely to be content not giving to charity and saying "Oh well the government has failed those people not me."

Surely you'd see an increase from the other side of some sort... I wonder if it would be enough. Charity is a LOT more efficient so there is a chance but...  I imagine there would still be gaps in the system based on area.

Go look up the full story and don't just trust me on this, if you find doubts. There was a reality with Glenn Beck that, while he did decent ratings, sponsors were avoiding him. Apparently his going full conspiracy and targeting liberal interests, cause them, in turn, to then target his sponsors. End result was he kept losing sponsors who didn't want to have anything to do with him:

Anyhow, can the main topic here be gotten back to? That is that of the idea to have people donate more to charity, in order to offset cuts in government. Do people think that is a good idea or not? It is not about "who is better", but whether the idea of doing this is a good idea or not.
