Clearly they are charitable, they're still giving him money after the market decided he wasn't worth keeping on the major networks anymore.

what are you talking about? he was the most watched "news" show in the 5pm time slot. he beat all other of the mainstream news networks, often times combined. 

the market was clearly there for him, as he destroyed the competition. 

he chose to leave traditional TV because he thought he could accomplish his vision/mission more effectively doing his own thing. because with his own companies he is afforded a lot more flexibility and freedom than he would with the constraints of other companies.

his radio program is still wildly popular as well.
