It's good. If you've ever played Robotech Battlecry, Macross Ace Frontier or Ultimate Frontier play a lot like it mixed with the Gundam Battle series gameplay. I like the Gundam Battle series more because it has a bit more variety because of the multiple suits(and I'm more of a Gundam fan,) while the gameplay to Macross has a bit more depth to it(with the three different forms should be obvious.)
One plus to Macross is that a lot of the stages on Macross are large and it works to their advantage having the fighter as one of the forms. In ZZ and Char's Counterattack, there are some stages that are a bit too big and an enemy on the other side might take quite a bit more time to get over to it in a in a non flight model suit.
If you haven't played Robotech Battlecry though, it's a really good game for PS2 and I think it's the only Robotech game that was localized in the west(Robotech Battlecry was developed by a western developer, and using the US series rather than the Macross series) Very difficult at certain points though, and one stage less than halfway through the game, Cat Scan, might end up making you quit because its difficulty(just go after the Zentradi fighters as those ones will attack the Cat's Eye.).

Thanks, I personally like Macross more myself.
No, but I have played the PSP games, and as a Macross fan, I liked them.

Robotech Battlecry is not a western localized version of a Macross game it is a game made in the west based on he US Harmany Gold basterdized version of Macross.
