Forums - Sales - Phil Harrison: PS3 price drop is not even on the radar

If anyone has actually run a business, cutting prices permanently is never something you look forward to. It's easy to say lower your profit margins when your money is not on the line.

I guess they need to figure out if they have more to gain by lowering the price. Would Blu-ray movie sales go up? Would they go up enough to pay $100 extra per console? The world may never know. Maybe during the holidays they will release the 80gig for $599.... thats kinda a price cut... lol

maybe they'll release a white  80 gig one and call it the PS3 Elite :-p

Typical Sony fanboy ranting: "PS3 price will drop any month now!"

Typical Sony response: "PS3 price will not be dropping any time soon."

Typical Sony fanboy response: "Sony is lying! Price will drop holiday '07 if not sooner!"

Give it a break...I'm sick of all the threads based on the PS3 and a possible price drop.

are you high or drunk ?

Well like its been said before, price drops are not gonna be announced months in advanced - cause that would kill sales.

So when any company says there is no price drop, never believe it :P

End of thread right there.

  I'm actually agreeing with you.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

A price drop now wouldn't make sense - I think the only thing that could push it, is a "across the board" price drop from MS - which isn't likely either.

The big hitting PS3 games aren't out yet - and there are plenty coming this year. That will drive sales, no need for a price drop yet. If it happens, maybe around Feb-March next year (12 months in).

...

Then again, if the sales figures are as weak as I suspect them to be in the coming months... anything is possible. We'll have to wait for the numbers, they have sort of been flattering to the PS3 to date.

I don't believe anything that comes out of Phil Harrison's mouth these days and of course he'd never admit to a price drop, it would be foolish since it would kill demand until the price was lowered.  But if sales don't pick up for the PS3 and if this Christmas sees a lot of Wiis and 360s being moved then you can bet that even if Sony doesn't "officially" lower the price you'll see stores do just that by having amazing sales on them ($50-$75 off with a free game thrown in as well).

How much do the stores profit from the PS3? How much can they drop the price without losing money, especially if they throw in another game?

lol.. I also agree.. but just because it's possible it's not true, doesn't mean it's not possible that it is true

There is not gonna be a price drop until at least christmas time, and probably in reality not until next year.  You have to have games that everyone wants for a price drop to be effective.  Honestly dropping from 600$ to 500$ isn't gonna have that much of an impact if you ask me anyway.

Yes, I also think a price drop won't be effective. The $500 version of PS3 isn't selling that well. Why would a $100 price drop work? Sony can't drop their price, because there unique selling points ain't up and running. (Free Online, Blu-ray) Why dropping the price only with Motorstorm & RFOM. All upcoming exclusives of 2007 ain't enough for a price drop.
