Can't you LAN tunnel old online games after the servers have been shut down? Think I saw someone doing it with Timesplitters FP, Twisted Metal Black recently.

Of course, it's sad that officially the servers are down, but I don't think the online component is lost forever. The community wouldn't be the same, but there's ways to see it again in the future.

Dude can you show me that link? I would love to play some Timesplitters

The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InKadRi8Sdc, and there's a description about how the program works.  They have forums somewhere where they discuss what they're going to play (think they alternate games every weekend, but it's been a few months since I followed them).

That said, I think I was way off about the LAN tunnelling thing, the game has to have a LAN mode for it to work (makes sense) so perhaps MGO cannot be saved :(

edit: Here are the forums - http://www.ps2onlinegaming.com/forum/ still seems kinda active - they tried to get a Star Wars Battlefront 2 PS2 game going a week ago.

Sad to think that every MMO currently played will suffer this fate. One can always load up NES or C64 games on an emulator well after everyone's forgotten about them.

Since games are art, there should be a preservation fund for the best online games of the past.

I don't think most would consider online games as art.

I played MGO off and on for the last few years. To be honest while i'm normally able to pick up a controller and play a multiplayer game at least decently, this game really tried my patience and skill. I loved it. It was really addicting and I will surely miss it.

More people care about it than much of what is in current government funded museums. If films and books are art, games certainly are. If you want to have that debate.

With enough work any online game can be saved. There are hacked independent WoW servers and that doesn't have LAN. Just takes more effort.

this game was so much fun! I put in 1200 hours in it :(

I enjoyed hosting sneaking missions with all unique characters.

Ask me about being an elitist jerk

Time for hype

im shocked that it lasted this long honestly. It was a pain in the ass to get in, and i never really enjoyed the game it self. Wasnt bad and their was some satisfaction sneaking up on someone in a box and knowing their was an actual person on the end, but not really my thing

Skeezer is crying.... I can hear him....

he made a million of MGO youtube videos for all of us to watch... which I won't link...

Tears were shed my friend.

I ended up with 2990 hours on MGO and I believe it was easily the greatest online experience of this generation.
