Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Has 8 GB of Internal Storage

Again, the Wii had more major 3rd party successes than the Gamecube did in regards to overall chart success. 6 of the top 20 titles for Wii are third party, and 27 of the top 50. Comparatively, the Gamecube was 5 of the top 20, and 21 of the top 50. So even if multi-platform titles were arguably more prevalent on the Gamecube, 3rd parties did better on the Wii, which has arguably extended the life of the console and contributed in some small way to the Wii's success.

Certainly, Nintendo is the master of its own destiny, but 3rd parties are a huge boon to help the WiiU out. And my argument is focused on if they'll push content very long into the WiiU's lifespan if revenues are not as high as they desire.

Of course 3rd parties are a boon. But I thought this discussion was about multiplatform DLC. Wasn't it?

It was, until you decided to change the subject about Nintendo's first party support on the Wii and Gamecube. I only obliged with a reply.

Since there is nothing more to really discuss, I will leave this thread and not reply to it. We'll come back to this type of discussion a year or two from now, and see where my statement stands.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

There is far too much conjecture in this thread for my liking, we still have no idea of the configuration for the initial Wii U SKU. Why don't we wait and see?

Given that Nintendo included an SD card with the 3DS and given that a 64gb sd card can now be had at retail for as little as $35, this problem could largely up and evaporate depending on what Nintendo includes with the system. I don't actually think they will pack in a 64gb card but the point is they could and then all this discussion about supposed DLC limitations becomes moot.

Even if they don't pack in any SD card and the majority of the user base doesn't have the inclination to expand the system storage via SD or HDD i can't see this being a tipping point for developer support. There are certain developers that have historically shown that they aren't that interested in supporting Nintendo so unless there has been some fundamental change in attitude from those developers they may continue this trend and will provide any excuse that suits them. e.g. too casual, too hard to compete with Nintendo 1st party, Nintendo are hard to work with, underpowered, development tools are poor etc.  Conversely, if they see value in supporting Nintendo and think there is money to be made, I don't think storage restrictions will stop them.

@ hsrob (sorry quote wont work)

I have to agree lol
The best part is the (CANT COMPETE WITH NINTENDO 1st PARTY)

I keep wondering why all those companies waste like 50 millions per game and the only thing they do is average or copy paste games of their previos games. Where does all the money go? They should invest 50 millions in training new creative people and then their games would be better and cheaper to produce = WIN FOR ALL.

The sd card included aspect of your comment is quite interesting. As i wrote before i actually have no prob with the 8gb and no HDD because we can always add more space but Nintendo might have started the production of WiiU with 8gb in 2011 and so there is no way in changing this now. I mean who would dismantle all the produced consoles just to change the onboard flash lol.

But a bundled SD card as you mentioned might be a smart move.

Especially when one considers that buying a ton of flash memory chips in late 2011 or early 2012 and implementing them into the WiiU
(manufacturing process of the console has to start as early as possible to have enough consoles ready for launch)
is more expensive than buying a ton of flash memory/sd cards that dont need to be soldered into the console and therefore can be bought a short time before the consoles launch (this saves alot of money)

Well why not? Given that the "official" hard drives produced by companies like Microsoft for the Xbox 360 are exorbitantly higher than what we see on the market, we might as well get one for ourselves for the Wii U since it's permitted. Wouldn't cost that much anyway, and it isn't limited to just, say 250-500GB from what we've seen from the PS360. I've a 1 TB HD waiting to be used.

seriously, people using analysts as an argument now even though they haven't been right since 2005? I've been using DD on Steam since early 2000s', the whole DLC argument has nothing to do with DD! It's all just a part of it! It's like people are smoking crack all of a sudden making this such a big deal when you can pick up an external storage everywhere! I wouldn't be surprised at all if MS and Sony follow suit in the future and tell people to go out and buy USB3 HDDs in a few years if it'd help their consoles sell and some people in this thread screaming that it's such a smart move and those USB3 drives will destroy everything in it's path like a fucking death star. how behind the times can some of you people be?

This argument is near identical to the one people are having with the whole smart glass argument, "lots of people have smart phones and tablets, they can use their own device, etc"

Now its external hard drives and no one can possibly understand how to get or do that, almost everyone I know, who WORKS carries around a portable hard drive in their bags or some form of portable storage (USB flash drive).

Everyone seems to be missing the point that this is the Internal storage, and Nintendo could easily launch the system with an SD card already in it, like many smart phones.

Wait until you find out all of the information before you (inevitably) complain about everything Nintendo does.

LOL i didin't think of that, it's true this is only internal storage.

It maybe also mean that's system storage not even an Hard Drive.

Just a thought, but isn't it possible for future SKUs to have more than 8GB?

The 360/PS3 didn't start out with what they have today.

Yes, but when has Nintendo liked to do anything with different SKUs?

I don't think they do different sku's, really beyond color its never that I have seen, but think about their DS, then the DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL, those things are certainly in the norm for them.
